Fix it right or don't fix it.

 

If the repair is only a scratch on the quarter panel why would u not jus slap a sticker on there?

 

$40 of paint and you can do a decent job. atleast until you can fix it right. wet sand the whole panel with 1000grit till the whole surface is dull.(dont go to the metal) feather the area where the scratch is so it smooth(you will go to metal here). primer the area where you feathered the scratch, wet sand the area smooth with 1000 grit. spray the whole area with the base coat color(can be had for $20) leaving 8" along the edge of the panel un painted. lay as many coats as need to blend in. then put 3-4 coats of clear coat.

of course you have to tape every thing off to prevent over spray, but its it an effective way to fix it good.

 

i will fix it right eventually im just tired of looking at it, and a sticker is too obvious and akward looking on that spot

im no pro. just do a 25% overlap on each pass. it might be scary to do it, but its not hard. honestly this is your cheapest and best looking option.....if you can lay platidip, you can do a rattle can paint job.

 

and for the love of god, dont put racing stripes down the side of your Z

 

Why don't you at least, if you haven't already take it to a few shops to get a quote. It doesn't look like a large job, so maybe it can be blended over part of the panel.

have you tried to buff that out so its less noticeable, but really its hard to see from that pic so maybe its something you can live with or try touch up paint like everyone suggested earlier, its 13 bucks a bottle from the dealer and cheaper online.

 

Id rock a scratch before I rocked a big thick plastidip skid mark down the side of my car.

 

Some idiot scratched my daytona Blue Zed in the same place as yours. The scratch was about 18 inches long and went down to the white primer so looked really obvious. I have no paint or body shop skills but bought a bottle of touch up from my Nissan dealer, a small bottle of thinners, a couple of model makers paint brushes and am in the process of building up the paint by dabbing it on as opposed to 'painting' it on as i don't have a steady enough hand. I'm using 2500 grit wet n dry in tiny pieces to flat the paint and abraid it for the next coat. By appying tiny amounts of paint and not using the brush that comes with the bottle of touch up the scratch has virtually disappeared, a couple more dab coats and some clearcoat and you won't know it was there. There are a couple of good You Tube recordings that gave me the confidence to have a go myself. It has cost me no more than $30 and i have another skill to add to my belt. I've surprised myself cos i thought i'd end up making a mess of it and paying for a professional repair. Go on have a go at it, you might surprise yourself.

 

The paintless dent removal guys that prep used cars for dealers may be able to help, as they often do touchup work, too. Some are very skilled. I'd call the local paintless dent removal guys and see if you can find one willing to take on the task.

Dealer touchup paint sucks, though, and I've never found them to be a good match. I always buy mine from this company:

That stripe idea is going to look like @ss, really, don't do it.

As far as fixing it, the situation is a lot like having torn leather seats, there's no
cheap solution that doesn't make the car look like crap.

Stickers/touchup/wrap are all mask or band aids, and are short term solutions. Since
your the only one that has this scratch on their brain best to suck it up ignore it for
now and save to get it fixed the right way.

I know for me I don't have low enough standards to accept touchup as a final fix. From
certain angles when the sun is on that side of the car it will never look good from 20ft
away. I understand not everyone goes to the same extremes when it comes to looks
though.

i swear i wasn't making fun of you but i was imaging it looking JUST like that on your car and i couldn't help but agree. that **** would look dope all crooked and ****.

you should go with the r8 look...

 

Just use one of those scratch fix tubes man. If done right it can hide quite a bit. Don't go painting the whole area yourself - it will just look worse.

 

ITT : Get a scratch....rice it up with a racing stripe.

 

dont do this. it wont even come close to matching. not only will the color look like crap but the clear will be way off as well.
like others said just leave the scratch until one day having the panel repainted correctly by a shop you know will paint match well.
a scratch looks less ghetto than all other options
a very small amount of silver touchup paint only on the white part of the scratch might look ok, use a very thin brush. maybe a silver sharpe.

 

ive heard of people using toothpicks instead of brushes. try that

 

i dont owe my dad anything but he has done a lot for me including paying for gas the whole time i was car hunting. and you all gave me great ideas but i guess im gonna go with the majority and just use a tiny bit of touchup paint just to make it at least a little silver again. because im afraid if i fix the panel later down the road it gonna get scratched again or im gonna want a new style panel so i guess touchup to the rescue haha thanks guys you saved my car from turning into a honda
