Default on board computer mpg dte accuracy.

For whatever reason my 03 tells me im almost always over 32mpg.
Everyfillup im around 23mpg. What determines the accuracy of this gauage.
So in terms what does the computer look at when determining these numbers?
Seems maybe I have a sensor off or something. No I dont have any cel
Thanks

The gauge isn't very accurate. If you coast down a long hill, you can get it to display 99mpg.

The MPG reading isn't instantaneous, it's a continuous moving average. Nonetheless, no way 32mpg is anywhere near accurate. Try resetting it with your next fill-up.

Mine says Im getting around 26-28 if I hit it on a straight with no hills or anything at around 68 mph. That seems pretty reasonable to me but once you start throwing hills and corners in your mpg will drop by a little bit.

Lets all remember that it's a gauge…nothing more nothing less...

The gauge can be somewhat accurate, but it can also be tricked quite easily. Reset it when you fill up next and see what happens.

are you only supposed to reset it after each fill up? i tend to reset it when it drops below 15 mpg from driving around in a parking lot for too long...

I reset each fillup, even so it's 6-10 mpg sometimes more off. It was just a thought, that maybe I could attempt to make it more *accurate*. Even when I rag the **** out of it it tells me 26 mpg. Haha

I do, it shows the average for the tank of gas. Typically it is within 0.2 mpg . Both of my Z were that accurate , same with my Juke

Mine ('08) is right on the mark, too, and I usually reset with every fill-up.

I never fill up with a full tank but always reset mine and it seems to be pretty damn accurate, however i have seen some older 03-05's getting higher than normal readings for some reason...maybe the HR 07-08's are more accurate??

I try to reset as little as possible. my thinking is the longer i have it on the more accurate my lifestyle mpg is. overall im at 16.9-17.1 which makes alot of sense. I have a heavy foot when needed and do about a 75:25 ratio of city and highway driving. also I have a 08 z seems pretty damn spot on. i can make it say what ever i want just reset it go down the street and boom 31 mpg but obviously thats manipulation and not fact

Likewise If I dont reset the trip its more accurate in the high teens. I do about the same mpg 75 city 25 highway. And I stomp the right foot to get passed Morning rush.

On a side note I've been reading these cars dont like to fill all the way up. There ar times it'll stop at half tank g 10gal or so. So in that case I can't calculate. (Recall was performed long ago)

I find mine pretty accurate if i reset after every fill up. I never used to and wondered why it always read 20mpg.

Ignore it. Reset the trip odometer, fill the tank, drive it, fill it again and divide the miles driven by the gallons needed to refill. Old school but accurate......On my '03 it is always dead on. 28 MPG on the trip to ZDayZ for 400 miles. 14 when I reset it and ran the Dragon up and back. Hmmmmm......
