Is the HR worth it?

Is it worth it? No. Will you regret buying a DE and not the HR? Yes. If youre not tracking the car, will you truly notice? No. See question 2. I went from a DE to a 370Z. The 370Z is obviously quicker, faster. Can I really feel the difference on my butt dyno? I dont know. I do like the 7500 RPM though.

The HR looks nicer with the redone headlights, LED taillights and bulging hood. If you get one, do not get a CAI unless you get the longtube ones. Ingen makes longtube intakes and so Does Stillen. If you get any short intakes, they will produce almost the same HP as stock and are not worth the money. I dont know if this is true for the DE engine, but it is true for the HR engine.
I have an HR with Ingen Longtube intakes and the Motordyne ART pipes. Still have the stock exhuast, but saving up to buy the Motordyne Shockwave as well.

Been thinking about that lately and I don't want to instal/remove each time for emissions.
LOOLLL was thinking the same thing...
Hopefully I can find an HR for a decent price sometime in the future.
I'll test drive a couple today and post about it later tonight.

Its supposed to, thats the point. Its win/win or lose/lose depending on how you look at it. More lose/lose if he doesnt go with HR. he prob wont feel any difference but he will KNOW there is.

I never noticed the difference too much just regular daily driving. Mashing the loud pedal, up high, yes, there is a noticeable difference, due to power curve and sustained power. Though Im willing to bet my old DE was faster than my 370z from say 0 to 30-ish. The 370Z handles like a $60K car, its very impressive in the corners.

From a lot of dyno testing I have read about on the DE a CAI is a waste of money. Take into account with short ram intakes they have heat soak unless you make a box for it to get cool air and not the hot engine air under the hood. I have an 04 convertible with a DE motor, and I cant wait to sell it and buy an 07 or 08 hardtop.
My reasons for wanting an 07-08:
-Newer transmission CD09 instead of CD08 (its notorious for problems, CD09 should shift smoother)
-Variable timing on the exhaust side instead of just intake
-Newer headlights and tail lights (newer lights alone would run over a grand, newer ones are bi-xenon also I believe)
-Like the look of the hood better
Also another popular mod with people is an UpRev Osiris tune. I dont have one personally, but a few other people I talked to have had it done to squeeze out a little extra HP out of the motor.

You sound like you have a good handle on things.
Yes, you can choose to tune on UpRev's Osirus or run a Haltech Platinum ECU. The choice is yours.
The first thing you should do imho is buy an HR-Z. DE-Z is cheaper and perfectly fine. But you would be much happier on an HR platform, imho.
good luck.

Owned both and 04 de and now an 08 hr.
I liked my de but I love my hr. The interior is nicer, obviously the external looks have been upgraded, but the motor is the main attraction for me. These hr motors are superb.
I've raced many cars with both z's and the hr crushes some cars that the de would simply have no chance against. I must add that my de had only a spacer and k&n filter so I have no experience with a full bolt on de. Though from what I ve seen and heard even a stock hr smokes a full bolt on de most of the time.
At the track my hr seems to run better times than even most 370z's as well. So to me, it's the best of both worlds. Better looking than a 370z IMO, just as fast, but half the price.
To summarize, unless you plan on FI, get the HR.
Oh and one last thing, many de's consume oil, especially the 06 rev up models. My hr takes zero oil between services, and I drive her hard and lots of freeway miles.

HR is all around better. There is no good reason to buy a DE at this point. The Z is becoming an old car and even the 370z are coming close to end of life model. If you don't have the $ to buy an HR now, you probably shouldn't be buying a Z in the 1st place. Don't be trying too hard to settle for any Z.

If this is your "yuppie" car, get what you can afford, you have a lot of time to buy cars in your life, be smart with this one and you will be able to buy whatever you want later on.
