first off....that page has been posted countless times on this forum and MANY other auto forums. i dont even have to click the link to know what it is....so prepare to get flamed.

second....i personally, DO agree with it. i feel the worst way to break in a car is baby it in its first miles, and many other engine builders, sports car enthusiasts, auto racers, etc. will agree.

very common link, only link of its kind. never seen any verifyable data on it from any other source.

I look at it as a sense of security, reassurance for those that choose to ignore the owners manual expressing the advice of those that built the engine(who argueable should know whats in the best interests of their own creation)

take which ever side you want. in reality, little chance that either way makes any difference(babying it hurts the engine? come on...), to me breakin is more of a time for you to adjust to the car. so you dont do 100mph into a tree when it gets out of hand in a turn.

My friend works as a powerplant mechanic for Nissan in the Chicago area. He said that on the 3.5's no break in is necessary. I hope he is right because I beat the crap out of mine.

they build the 3.5l engines in deckard TN(not the ones used in the Z specificly) do they have another plant in chicago?

but as you demonstrated, it gives reassurance for those that do not want to wait. need some sort of basis for their actions.

stretch of a comparison but if tomarrow god was proven false, all those that spent their lives living by a religion would be pretty pissed. and vice versa.

I'd be more inclined to believe his story if the pictures weren't blatantly false. There is no way any engine can be run without getting some carbon deposits on the piston.

His "broken in my way" piston has been cleaned, or is new.

It always seemed odd to me that if break-in was so important, why doesn't the manufacturer do it at the factory?

Not sure how they do this, but some high performance bikes are broken in at the factory. I can't see why the same can't be done for high performance automobiles.

mostly production costs. 1200miles worth of gas isnt free. plus the ecological impacts(nissan makes a lot of cars, to run every engine for 1200miles for absolutely no "real" purpose?)

its just not realistic. however some do, I beleive BMW breaks in the M3 and M5 if Im not mistaken, same for some exotic cars.

in the grand scheme of things, the 350Z with 287hp is on the very bottom end of "high performance" if you did the Z, may as well add alot of other cars. they have to draw the line a bit higher.

and as phatmitzu said, people are pissed about 10miles on the clock, imagine 1200? hell naw.

Porsche breaks in their engines on the bench before they go into the car. They don't run them 1200 miles on the bench though. As far as that link, it appears on every car board. I wonder why none of the car manufacturers have figured this out. I guess they don't have the budget Motoman has to do R&D. Personally, I break in my engines the way the manufacturer recommends, and I've been pleased with the results. The only thing I do differently is change the oil around 1000 miles. It gives me some gentle, quality time with my new car. Then the $hit hits the fan It's kind of like dating, then marrage. Anyway, with modern manufacturing technology I'll bet the break in really doesn't matter that much. The biggest truth in the article is :
Q: What is the most common cause of engine problems ??? A: Failure to: Warm the engine up completely before running it hard !!!
