Default best way to ship out a hood?

Hey all
I have a buyer for the hood I am selling. I've never shipped out an item nearly this big. How have others shipped their hood? Which company and how did you package it?
Thanks

You could go to a body shop and ask for a cardboard box from a hood they have installed already. They usually cut them up and recycle/trash them. They usually come with foam for the corners and one for the latch area.

Yeah i was planning on trying something like that. What company can i ship out with though? Seems people go through greyhound but I've never dealt with them before and not sure how reliable that route is.

Greyhound is kind of a pain in the ***. I would never use them. Its all based on space availability. They told me it could take up to 3 weeks for a bumper to be delivered. Plus if its not in a box they will not insure it.

youre best bet is Fedex freight. Im pretty sure a hood exceeds their maximum dimensions for a package.

I have no idea who to use. I looked into using UPS/Fedex freight when I was wanting to ship something and it was more expensive to ship then to buy a new one.

Drive it there. I doubt there's anything under the hood that won't endure the return trip with no hood.

Hi, guys long time lurker on here. Plz before you ship a hood.

#1 take photos
-get blue painters tape cover all of the edges
-get pipe insulator - the foam stuff that home depot sells
-line the edges with it
-bubble wrap it very well and make sure make the buyer aware that

what is foam pipe insulator look at the edeges of the GT-R rims before they are packed.

as for shipping.
Freight quote or - but you will have to take it to a terminal shipping place
do not ship grayhound...........
UPS will be very expensive and do not use the ups lable through paypal as you will get dinged for dimensional weight and it will be in the $290+range.

pay for it through UPS.com

good luck

just follow though the steps I mentioned and it will pan out for you but make sure you get photos before you pack it all and make sure your buyer is aware and whats up meaning if the box shows up dented in - refuse it and deal with the claims issue. once its signed for then your buyer has to pay to ship it back to you.

FYI.

1 question
You said "Freight quote or - "
What was the or? Haha

And $290 range? I could've sworn I've heard of people shipping for around 150-200.

Lots of bubble wrap and get a mirror carton. Those are the strongest boxes.

At my old job we would ship out paintings that cost over 10 grand and we used lots of bubble wrap and a mirror carton. The box was double ply and did the job, even for international shipments.

2 pieces of advice, when you pack, make sure it doesn't move around in the box, or if it does, it BARELY moves. 2nd, put FRAGILE stickers all over the box.

Coming from somebody with 3 years of experience as a manager at a shipment warehouse, with most of the good being expensive artwork.

Drop it off at a UPS Store. If they package it then they fully insure it as well. It costs more but after you leave the store you have no further liability.

I dont believe this is an option. Im pretty sure it exceeds the maximum size for standard shipping. Im almost certain it would have to go freight.

That's true and UPS offers freight. I think it was a shade under $300 for me to ship a front bumper with this option.

Yeah I've come to find out regular mail is not an option through any company (UPS, USPS, FEDEX). It would have to go through their freight shipping which is extremely expensive and not worth it.
Honestly the only realistic option I seem to have is greyhound since they are the only reasonable price. I'll just have to go crazy on the padding to make sure nothing can happen to it.

What he said.

Hoods and other big car parts are shipped in slotted containers. A wood frame with slots in the top and bottom protect the hood. This is why many sellers will say "local only." Because the price of crating and shipping is exorbitant.
