Folks, I have to ask your opinion. I was just at a dealership thinking about purchasing a different car. They offered me $16,000 for my 2008 350Z Touring Roadster with 54K miles on it. (automatic). It is in great shape and has the ventilated orange seats and chrome wheels and new tires. Do yu think I should take their offer or try to sell it on my own. Thanks!

I wouldn't. Especially if the z is paid off. The dealer wants to make money off you both trade and new purchase

Just reading the heading. . . .I'd have suggested you didn't buy that ghey @$$ version of a Z in the first place. I hope you can get your money out of it. Maybe some bleached blond middle aged woman who couldn't afford a 'vette will put off her facial crows' feet surgery and buy the car of her dreams and you'll be out from under it.

Have you done your research? I just did a quick look on KBB, and trade in for your car is 17k. I know that kbb isn't the best, but at least for a baseline. Go, you tell them what you are going to get fo the car not the otherway around. Trade it in.

 

One extra thing to consider regarding trading in versus selling privately, is the sales tax on the new vehicle. Each state does things a little differently, but in your state Georgia you can deduct the trade in value from the taxable amount of the new car. Depending on the rate a $16,000 trade value will save you over $1,000. So to come out ahead, you would have to exceed this amount on a private sale.

 

Jennifer's right up to a point, but Georgia changed the law in 2013. Sales tax on motor vehicles has been replaced by the Title AD Valorem Tax.

TITLE AD VALOREM TAX
• A one-time tax for vehicles purchased in Georgia on or after March 1.
• It replaces Georgia sales tax and the annual ad valorem tax.
• It is 6.5 percent of the vehicle's value and must be paid when the vehicle is titled.
• The tax applies to private sales, as well.
• Owners of vehicles bought before March 1 will continue to pay the annual ad valorem tax while they own the vehicle.

I drove several late model Corvettes before I bought my car in '09, and I've driven a couple since. I wouldn't trade car-for-car, much less if they want a bunch more money.

Don't worry about what the buttheads say about the 5AT. They're just jealous cause they have to work on their clutch and transmission while you're out enjoying your Z, which is probably as fast or faster to boot.

I think selling an automatic z will be harder then manual.

When I was looking for a z years ago I only wanted a manual. So in all searching I filtered out the autos. A true enthusiast will want manual.

Take thev16k and call it a day. You get the tax credit and there is no fiscal difference selling to them or private.

 

Another middle aged member getting a corvette. I'm seeing a trend here lol. I wouldn't have got the 5AT in the first place. And like oldschool said, most people are looking for stick shift sports cars rather than auto so it might be tough to sell on your own. Only type of people that might be interested would be a woman in her late 30s or 40s. I know when I was looking for my Z I saw a lot of automatics flooded at dealerships and private sellers. It was rare to see any 6speeds. I also stayed away from the roadsters too, the wind blowing through my hair isn't my style unless it's a ferrari, mclaren or R8.

 

sell it to the dealer if you really want the vette. I would just get a 370z.
