Gas guage inaccurate?

First, let me start off by saying I am getting about 20 mi/gal by actual measurement (not the computer which says about the same). However, my guage seems to be way off. After filling the tank, it says 3/4 after only driving about 50-60 mi. It's down at half at about 120 mi. and the warning light goes on when there is still 5 gallons in the tank (at which time the computer warning for dte comes up and pretty much stays at some number between 30-40 dte for about the next 50 to 60 miles. So, I was wondering what was everyone else's experience with the guage? While a great car I am starting to get a bit disenchanted with some of the obvious oversights (Bose radio, visor rattle, etc.). I bought the Supra Turbo in 93 in the first week of production and never had a single issue in 4 years. You would think Nissan would have gotten all these little things right on the new car that is supposed to rebuild their image.
I had the same problem yesterday. I had 1/2 tank of gas and was starting up to north jersey from cape may (deep south jersey) and didn't know where I would find Sunoco Ultra so I filled the tank in Rio Grande, NJ mile marker 4 Garden State Parkway. Attendant filled 8 gal and I started the car and took off. Immediately noticed the the fuel gauge was still at 1/2 and the dte was the same. My fiance said the pump said 8 gallons, fact.
I stopped by the CVS to get a card for the engagement party I was going to and checked the gas cap to see if it was loose. Drove the 151 miles there and back, dte went to 25 and started blinking low fuel light. I went way past the dte and filled it up about 30 miles from home. Gauge and dte reset upon 2nd fill and everything was back to normal.
The answer: during the 1st fill I left the key in the "on" position for the radio and fan/vent (it was 80 and muggy). In order for the fuel system to report the status of the tank the key must be in the "off" or "acc" position.
DO NOT LEAVE THE KEY IN THE "ON" POSITION WHILE REFUELING.
