Default Drone - Fixed

While driving at highway speeds this weekend, my 350Z developed a noise that sounded very similar to an exhaust drone.

At 3000 rpm, it sounded like: "Hmmmmmmmmmmmm"

After jacking it up, crawling underneath, and inspecting everything . . . . I discovered that a rubber boot that was designed to protect the manual shifter linkage had come loose. It was resting and rubbing on the drive shaft.

Since it was ruined by all the rubbing, I discarded it.

Noise gone, problem solved.

Now if I can only find that rattle in the trunk area . . . .

Oh, thought you might have gotten into the wrong car that turned out to be a Mazda.

Hint: You have to be over 40 to get that one. Hint:

Hah. Seeing this makes me think 350z commercial kinda stole the idea from Mazda now.

I agree! I have a rattle/squeak in the trunk area as well. I removed the jack thinking that might have been it, but no luck. Maybe this is a common problem?

A VERY common trunk area rattle in these cars (as well as first and second gen G35's) are the rear shock mounts. I was pulling my hair out because of that damn squeaking/rattling/clanking.

If you've played around with the jack, the spare, and the plastic hatch trim panel and still haven't been able to find the noise, it is almost assuredly those shock mounts. They're $20 a side and takes around a half an hour to do, and that's with a beer break! No more noise! Do it!

The rubber boot you threw away is designed to keep dust and debris away from the shifter linkage. You should replace the ruined boot, not just throw it away. Nissan designed these Zs to last a long time, but you're exchanging one problem for another (worn shift linkage) in the future.

^ I live in snow and dirt road free metropolitan Atlanta. After 11 years the underside of my 350Z looks brand new.

+ I only drive it on sunny Sundays

No such thing as a dust free roadway, Sunday driving or not. Any kind of grit that works its way down into the linkage is not easy to clean out and will, over time, degrade the smooth operation of your shift mechanism. Besides, this is a Z, not some econo beater you can cheap out on. You're telling me it's not worth doing this simple repair on?
