Need your help!
I'm an employee for a dealership...
We took a 03 350z in trade knowing it had an dual sport exhaust. As we performed our safety inspection test on it we've come across that the previous owner has deleted the stock cats and just ran straight pipe. Looking to see if I can collect some information such as;
Can the stock cat's bolt up to the dual sport exhaust? Or are we better off going full exhaust.
Reason for my question... its actually a federal offense to trade a car in with out cats on it. An we are trying to do the right thing and not take legal actions (up to $100,000 fines). So I'm doing the leg work for us

What brand? What size are the pipes? Is it a true dual exhaust? You haven't given enough to go on.
I don't see how you could do much to the person who traded the vehicle in... if he says he only used it on the track and you didn't check before accepting the vehicle, it's on you.

Highly doubtful that the dealership can go after the previous owner.
Something that the dealership should have checked before taking possession of the vehicle...
I'm sure someone heard the car run when it was traded in, someone should have asked, "does this thing have cats on it?"
I didn't know it was a federal offense to do this though.
If you can't get the stock cats on the aftermarket exhaust, you can probably find a stock exhaust rather cheap.

More information needed regarding the aftermarket exhaust system. In most cases (but not all), aftermarket systems bolt directly to the Cats or test pipes. You should be able to replace the test pipes with OEM cats, but more information and/or pictures would help answer your question with certainty. Worst case scenario you guys could pick up a used OEM exhaust system and used OEM cats for cheap. These are readily available on the second hand market since so many Z owners these days ditch their OEM exhaust. There are plenty of auto wreckers who have used cats for sale.
If the owner purchased one piece exhaust header/down pipes you will have a lot more work and $$$ needed to get this car smog legal again.

Sounds like someone is going to get fired.
No big deal anyways, the amount of markup you dealerships put on your inventory more than makes up for it.
Admit it OP's dealership probably got the trade for dirt cheap...

Seriously though pm me ill probably give you what you paid for it when you low balled the original owner... Its obviously not in great shape and you cant sell it as is.
Sounds like OP works at one of those smaller Wheeler/Dealer used car lots. You all know the ones I'm talking about. They most likely don't have a large service department, so they're losing $$$ on this trade-in. A large scale dealer would probably not have accepted a modified vehicle trade-in without having one of their techs inspect it first.
