Default Keyless entry issue

Hi all, I have a 2005 Z, and up until about 2 weeks ago, my keyless entry has worked fine. So first thought I had was to replace the battery in the fob. Didn't fix the issue. The weird thing is that the fob still works, I just have to aim the remote into the front windshield and be about a foot from the car. Can anybody come up with a reason why this is happening? Also, I have a brand new spare fob that I tried and it does the same thing.
Thanks, Cal.

Does it happen everywhere you park?

Because your FOBs all work the same, I’m guessing the problem must be the car’s remote keyless entry system’s receiver.

Yes, happens everywhere I park. Spike100, I agree. I guess next step is locate the receiver and replace it.

I’m interested in your posting because I’m experiencing a similar problem, but to much less a degree. I have a 2003 Performance model I bought new. I could lock/unlock the car from quite a distance until just recently, when I now need to be within a few feet of the car. I tried replacing the FOB, and that had no effect; I need to be very close even using the new FOB.

I assume the receiver in the Remote Keyless Entry System has some sort of battery charged by the car. The system would also require an antenna. My guess is that either the appliance (battery?) powering the receiver or the receiver’s antenna is going bad. I need to check the service manual to verify my guesses.

I checked the manual and found that the receiver is under the passenger side dash. I'm going to check it out and possibly replace the module. I will keep you posted with any results

Reason I asked is that car remotes are susceptible to interference. I had one that wouldn't work when I parked near to a building where some kind of radio signal was being generated, but would work at 200ft everywhere else. The radio band they use is actually a military reserved band - they just use very low power so are allowed.

I had the same exact problem a couple of weeks ago. I replaced the battery in the remote, and it didn't help. I had just purchased a bluetooth OBDII scanner(obdlink lx). I left it plugged into the car, and I noticed the range went back to normal as soon as I unplugged it. I have read that aftermarket LED interior lights can call similar issues on other Nissans. Have you added any electronics recently?

Hmmm... Now that you mention it, my problem started after I replaced the radio. I wonder...

In for info.
Have the same problem on my beater scheissbox. Basicly have to mash the key fob against the driver side door window to be "in range", unless I hold it up to my chin like an idiot which lets me unlock/lock from the staggering distance of 3 ft.

Pull the fuse for the constant 12V power to your aftermarket radio and see if it works better. I've got a Kenwood navigation radio in mine, and it doesn't affect the range of the keyless, but I'll believe anything can interfere after I found out my OBDII scanner kills the range.
