Hey guys just a quick question..

I have a 2004 touring automatic Z that was in a wreck ..mainly front end but it still started afterwards it was pretty bad the front frame where the radiator sits was bent in but lucky nothing happened to the engine.

So I was wondering if I was to get a 2003 Z that is manual transmission but this Z has a engine problem can I swap my engine in this car and be good to go? what else would I need to keep in mind when doing this swap? considering I am taking an engine out of an auto car and putting it into a manual transmission car? would this work? what else would I need to look into besides the engine only or is that all?

Yup should swap no problem.

 

The engines are exactly the same (VQ35DE) the only difference is there's a flex plate and torque converter for an auto whereas the manual has a flywheel, clutch disk and a pressure plate.

​​​​theres actually a bushing/bearing (torque converter support bearing) the needs to be removed from the engine in the auto set up. You'll see it after you remove the flex plate and torque converter. It is a Beech to remove.

 

Wait a minute- to get any swap from an auto to a manual to function will require a different wiring harness and ECM change. These are not the plug-and-play cars of old.

 

I almost said that too. But his new car is MT. The motor of old is all he's pulling.

Shouldn't be any different since the tranny isn't going to be a factor. Motor to motor the loom should be the same. If he was going to swap the trans with it then he would have a little head ache. But the new chassis is already set up to support the M/T. So he should just have a plug n play.

 

Good catch- I re-read his original post and agree. If it's only a VQ swap and the harness and ECM stay in the coupe, than he should be able to swap cleanly. But if the ZR was in that big a shunt, and the OP considers it "lucky" the engine wasn't damaged, I'd be very careful in checking that engine over before assuming it's OK.

 

Just carefully check the vacuum ports on the plenum. Some on the Manual engine may be blocked off.

For safe measures, I would get a gasket set h just plan on swapping everything from one engine to the other. That way it's the same & you have all new gaskets.

 

Thanks guys! still deciding if I should take on this project and the headache the m/t car I can grab from someone for $2500 but like I said might be a headache to do all this or thinking I just go ahead and part out my whole car and be done with the Z ... will keep you guys posted!

Why part it out if you can be up and running in another Z for $3000... Then you can part out the rest of your smashed car... All your losing is the engine and your time, then you can part out the entire rest of the automatic bumper car.

So, How do you get the Torque Converter Support Bearing out? I'm doing an automatic engine swap into my manual trans car and need to get this out to install the pilot bearing.
