Nissan dealer key ripoff

Nissan dealer key ripoff
I bought a 2004 350z with 46,000 miles and one key. I have programmed my Ram keys in the past but I see it can't be done with Nissan. So I go to the dealer, Carlock Nissan in a Tupelo, MS who want $55 for the key, $165 for the remote and $110 to program them. Plus tax. So $354! Unreal. I find a local locksmith who is closer and will cut and program keys for $55. Not sure if you have to provide the key. I can pull the transponder from my key and attach it to the lock cylinder and get keys cut that I buy for $2.50. That sounds like a cheap way to go and stick it to Nissan.
Any of you tried this? Thank you.

if you had searched a little bit, on this site, and/or using Google, you would have found many cheaper alternatives, and instructions. These cars have been around for 14+ years now, so there's not a lot that hasn't been figured out.

Stealership, got that name for a reason.
IIRC at least in CA dealerships were just sued for this. I think they are going to put legislation on the amount they can upcharge. I heard a brief clip on the news but didn't catch up on the segment.
Hopefully it happens cause like you saw it's a monopoly and a scam outright.
But to be fair dealerships usually lose money or break even on car sales. It's the services and parts that make their profit.

I see that you've found a local locksmith that can cut and program keys for $55.. Sounds like a good deal to me, even if you do have to provide the key. I wouldn't pull your transponder and stick it in your cylinder. It won't make sense to your anti-theft system.

Never found instructions on the transponders. Have you?

That's around what I paid for my '05 touring with 70k in Feb of 2016. It now has 112k. I have a 128 mile round trip to work everyday. Mostly highway with some back roads. Still running strong, however, this engine can be a noisy bit** below 3500 rpm's. I'm having some occasional detonation on 93 octane(under load), and have now noticed a slight valve tap once it gets warmed up. Going to try the simple fixes first like thicker oil weight and fuel damper elimination..

I thought I got a decent deal on my 04 Performance with 132k for $5,000. Wish I could've gotten a lower mileage one, but up here in north MS, everyone wants 10 grand for their super high mileage ones. It's ridiculous.

What is the mileage of the ones you're saying have super high mileage?

You guys shouldn't bash the dealership so much. They provide a pretty hassle free service with guarantees and quality built into the parts and factory trained technicians. They have all the special tools and computer necessary to diagnose and fix vehicles. Plenty of customers happily pay the price for a piece of mind more than anything. Those technicians also go to school or have a manufacturer trainings and usually thousands of dollars worth of tools.
Just because you can't afford the dealership doesn't mean they're ripping you off

I ended up getting two keys and two remotes for $143 plus tax. The dealership would have charged me $700. Which is the smarter buy? The locksmith has the know-how and equipment to do the same thing the dealer does. The keys and remotes look exactly the same minus any Nissan logo. So I have over $500 left over to spend on my Z.

I got them from someone on Amazon. I'm sorry I don't know who.

I went to Dodge City, Alabama and bought mine. I am looking for a used truck and like you, I find that everybody in MS thinks their truck is worth a few grand more than book value.
