Default More newbie questions - Wheel and brake upgrade and spare

I looked, I swear I did...

2003 Enthusiast.

If I get a brake upgrade to Brembos/Akebono/Take Your Pick, and also move from 17 to 18" wheels, am I going to have a problem with the factory spare ? Thus necessating a tow in case of an issue ?

Sorry for the newbie stuff, but I though I saw a you tube guy who had to get towed, Northern Cali I believe. ANd he blamed his wheel upgrade.

Thanks, have a great weekend...

Your spare will not fit akebonos for sure. I know that because I have akebonos. I had to buy a 370z 18 inch spare. They show up once in a while on ebay

Man, I realize this is a stupid question the way I phrased it.

I'm sorry.

So I buy Brembos and 18's, and I have to get a new spare. Cool.... and obvious to some degree :-)

If I keep my 17's and just upgrade the brakes, what is the outcome of that ? Does the factory spare fit over a brake upgrade ? I do a lot of long distance driving and would actually be more worried about not having a spare..

Thanks for your patience ..

You might be better off going BMW style and just get some run-flat tires (as crappy as those are.)

You don't have to be sorry for asking a legit question. That's what we're here for. If you are going to run an aftermarket BBK, get a 370Z Sport spare. If you are going to run the OEM Brembo's, get the 350Z Track model spare.

Your 17's are not going to fit with bigger brakes.

AAA Roadside Assistance is my spare (worst case scenario). But as others mentioned, a track model spare or possibly the grand touring spare (or any trim package that came with the Brembos) will fit. I recommend calling up some Z recycle yards like saccityautoparts to see if they got compatible spare for cheap, not sure where you live so don't know if it's worth your time/money to ship or not.

Huh, this is something that never occurred to me. Good question. I was going to say what the guys already said. Since on those packages, the spare must fit over the bigger brakes (Brembos Z33, Akebono Z34) as it would be absurd for the manufacturer to expect you to do more than a wheel change on a busy road side.

But then I hear new cars nowadays don't even come with spare tires. 370Z carries spares? I didn't know that.

Lots of bad info in this thread. First, any OEM 350Z wheel will fit over Brembo's. Not the early 16" spare, though. Second, the later cars, I don't know the exact year, all had the larger 17" spare, which will fit the Brembo's. Or, as mentioned buy a spare from a Track, GT, Nismo, etc, or even a nice alloy spare from a newer G37 or 370Z. If the spare is 17", you're OK with the Brembo's, but I can't speak for the Akebono's. You'd probably need a spare from a 370Z or G37 that had Akebono's. I've got Brembo's and an appropriate spare, but if I get a flat, I'm calling my motor club or using the Fix-A-Flat I have in all my cars.

I have a 16 inch spare and a 17 inch spare and they are both sitting in my basement... If I get a flat car is getting towed home simple as that.

And the 16 inch spare will not even clear the rear brembo caliper... It will almost go on but you can't tighten the lug nuts.... Don't ask me how I know.
