275/60/15 vs 275/50/15
How many guys out there are running a 275/60/15 radial on their setup? I'm slightly afraid of having fitment/rubbing issues with that size of tire and would like to see who it's working for. I have my 15" wheels now in 15x8 with 5.5" backspace and I'm looking at buying tires now.Would like some input from the guys with experience. I have fully decided on the Mickey Thompson ET street R radial tires but am having trouble deciding which size to purchase. If I go with the 275/60/15 it is roughly 29" tall and I'm worried about fitment. The 275/50/15 is roughly 27" tall which I think will work perfect. Obviously I want the largest size tire I can safely run without issues. My car is lowered I think about an inch on hotchkis springs. I don't have chamber arms or to links yet to adjust the rear those things will probably be next along with solid diff and subframe bushings. Any input would be much appreciated guys! There's a stick shift cash days coming up and I want to be ready!

I run 295/35/18 rears and don't rub.
I would think you'd be fine if you ran 275/60/15 because 60mm to inches is 2.36 and if you add that to 15 you have 17.36 inches in diameter. In my case, I'd be at (35mm -> 1.37in + 18in) 19.37 inches and am still good in the rear.
Not sure if this is the right way of thinking about it though.

295/35/18 is roughly 27" tall. Same as the 275/50/15. The 275/60/15 is 29" tall.

Not really sure what all the confusion is here...... I mean, what is everyone speculating?? And where are these whack numbers coming from?!?
OP's calculations of tire diameters are at least CLOSE to correct...
275 60 15 27.99
275 50 15 25.83
OEM diameters for comparison.
225 45 18 25.97 F
245 45 18 26.68 R
HOWEVER..... I won't speculate on the fit of the desired sizes though..... first read, I'm thinking "drag application" but then "Mickey Thompson street radials" and can't decipher the mixed messages. Is this for a drag application or....??
Only reason I can see running 15" wheels is drag....
--------------
Just as a reminder..... tire diameter is calculated thusly:
((Tread width x aspect ratio) *2) + Wheel Diameter = Tire Diameter
And of course, if you are among those that didn't go with Jimmy Carter in converting to the more sane metric measurements, you can easily convert the answer above to inches.

Lol yes it is for a drag application...hince the Mickey Thompson R radials in those sizes I surely wouldn't run on the road coarse with a sidewall that size haha. I got the rough measurements from summit racing. They have height and width specs of every tire they sell.

Here's what I ended up going with. 275/50/15 Mickey Thompson ET street R radial. I could've fit the 275/60/15 there's plenty of clearance but these work fine. First impression these babies hook! Finally got the chance to launch with antilag and 12psi. On a **** road with 30psi in the tires no burnout it spun pretty bad haha. But I'm sure with less pressure 15psi-ish and a burnout it'll hook pretty good.

With some time on these et streets I should've gone with the taller tire. What are your plans with the car? Roll racing or dig racing? Is the car stick shift car or an automatic? With roll racing these tires hook pretty good. Dig racing on the other hand they do not hook well. I ended up ordering a set of 28-10.5 Hoosier slicks for dig racing next season. There's a small window for successful launches on a stick shift irs car with et streets. The slicks will be much better suited for dig racing on these cars. But to answer your question go with the 275/60/15's. They will fit fine especially on a stock height car. Mines lowered 1" and I have plenty of room for more tire with the 275/50/15's.

It's a street car / weekend toy. But I mostly roll race with it. But it will see a little bit of dig racing. It is a stick shift car. And on high boost it is making 600whp. My friend has a set of 26" NT555Rs on his car with the same power level as mine and he hooks really well from a roll. I'm about to order a set of Jegs SSR star wheel in 15x8" with 5.5 backspace. And the NT555R in 275/60/15.
Nice! I went with the Jegs wheels also best bang for the buck for price and looks. My Z is probably around the 700whp mark right now and it blows the et streets off until I hit 3rd gear from a dig. I need to try and dial in the boost by gear with the Haltech and try the slicks. If you only want to roll race the car you will be fine on the 275/60/15 et streets. Mine hooks from a 40 roll unless I brake boost then it spins but I would recommend the Mickey's for sure for drag radials.

I just got my new wheels and tires. I know I was asking about fitting 275/60/15 on a stock height Z, the plan was to put stock Z springs back on the car if these didn't fit. I'm lowered 1.2" in the rear with Tanabe GF210 springs. The tires fit, and don't look like they're going to rub. I may still have my rear fenders rolled. The old tires were Nitto NT05's in 275/35/19. The new ones are Nitto NT555R's in 275/50/15.

Wow, what's that HUGE black strip going around the rear wheels??
Oh wait, it's a sidewall.
Dayam, my drag razin' small block Chevy Nova didn't even have sidewalls like that.... 42 years ago. hahahaha.
