Default All bow down.

60 Year’s ago today - June 26, 1958 - Nissan imported its first cars to the United States.

The rest, as they say, is history!

That's a fun fact! So many great vehicles from them over the years...

What I love about Nissan is they look at what they have produced, what needs to be improved (for owners and corporate), and they design, engineer and manufacture to their highest level possible.

Gotta love it!

Only 60 years? Pretty cool that the "yoots" of today are so interested in the S30 and are buying them up.

Both. Nissan was the name since the ‘30s; but Datsun - a name used even before Nissan - was the name used abroad (exported from Japan) and was said to have been done so to insulate the Nissan brand in the event of failure.

If if you look under the hood of early Datsuns, fairly clear there was some switcheroo going on as most identifying castings said “Nissan” on them.

Sidenote: In 1978 or so, I had the license plate “NISSAN Z” on my then S30. Only Datsun enthusiasts understood the meaning of the plate as it wasn’t until 82 or so that Datsun “went back” to using “Nissan” globally. Constantly had to explain to others “Nissan is the real name of Datsun”. It was always met with “Uhhhh, ohhhkay...” with rolled eyes or stony silence. Laff....

Didn't they start as "Datson" but changed to a U due to the translation being seen as disrespectful to the company founder?

Yes, was Datson (honoring one of their first cars, hence “son of Dat”) and changed. Something along those lines.... “son” meant something that was deemed offensive or “not good” in some way but don’t think it had to do with any particular person.... but maybe, dunno.

I thought you were going to say it was your 60th birthday...

On a side note Dwight D. Eisenhower the 34th president of the United States was in office at this time...

I heard they came up with the name in a boardroom meeting in Tokyo. The boss said, "We need a brand name for the American market and we need it by the end of today."

One of the guys in the room raised his hand and said, "Dat soon???"

The rest, as they say, is history!

The “Great race” stopped in our town (Rothesay New Brunswick) on their way from Buffalo NY through to Halifax Nova Scotia.
Many interesting cars, some I have never seen before. One I never knew existed was a 4 door right hand drive Datsun Gloria!
