Visual and pull codes then report findings.

Check your dipstick, it's on the driver's side of the engine. Make sure it's properly secured/sealed. If the dipstick is not secure/sealed, oil can and will shoot out with the engine running and start burning off on the exhaust manifold. Based on your statement, it sounds like the vehicle went into limp mode, suggesting a major malfunction (Low oil, engine overheated, major timing or missfire issues, transmission issue for AT models, etc.). As Mic suggested, pull codes. If the vehicle was or is in limp mode, trouble codes will be present or stored.
