Default DE vs HR

So currently I own a DE. I daily it and live in a pretty busy city so traffic is sometimes pretty bad in the mornings and afternoons. For that reason I purchased an auto. I want some more power but don’t want to spend too much on mods. Would it be better if I just sold my Z and bought an HR. Or traded mine with some cash for one ? What do y’all think would be better .

And here we go.

Yes, the VQHR is a better motor than the DE. And well it should be as its newer, has more power up top and in general, a nice evolution in the VQ series.

But, is it that much better that you'd want to update to it for the reasons you cite (commute, auto trans, dealing with traffic)?

IMO, if your DE car has a ton of mileage and any HR you buy has a lot less, sure, why not? But that's a whole different rationale for upgrading versus the drivability things you're asking about.

Net net, from a power perspective and laying out additional cash for a like for like car (33 DE to 33HR), I personally think it's not worth it. If you were to ask me, I'd suggest an upgrade to a Z34 with VQ37VHR. That's worth it - again IMO - as the gain is 45bhp (or 63bhp on a Z34N). And with the 34s relative same weight (depends on trim on the specific 33's trim versus 34) and stiffer chassis, that power goes further. You WILL notice a big difference between the two generations.

In case you're wondering, I have owned all three (with my VHR experience in both 332bhp and 350bhp (Nismo) forms.) There's less people here who "like" the Z34 but I suspect its mainly due to the styling differences. But honestly, if I were asked (and I wasn't) which is a better car, easily the Z34. And like the DE vs HR argument, it had better be as it's newer and structurally superior. And that's not "IMO", that's empirical fact.

An auto is gonna be bad regardless so it don't matter which you have. Get a small turbo setup and call it a day.

I don't mind the looks but for me it's wheel base, the 370Z has a shorter one which makes it more lively. I dont know how you drive, but for me I value that in the Z33 as I like it being solid at high speed.

Get a tune. Best $500 you'll spend especially with the auto makes a big difference. Way more responsive and fun to drive.

+1 to all previous comments.

I like my RevUp DE over the HR, but I'm an oddball, just like the RevUp, so it suits me.

I mean how much more power do you need? Unless you are tracking the car or trying to gap some american cars why even bother. Is the HR better motor than the DE? of course. I have an 04 and at times I also feel like i would want more power but then i think to myself what am i gonna do with with 40ish more hp's? If im gonna upgrade I would upgrade to a z34 as mentioned above. Personally me I would keep the DE add some mods and engine. Just keep in mind any mods you add dont expect to gain a whole lot of HP unless your are turbo charging it.
