Hey guys

I recently acquired a Touring edition 350z and it is an awesome car. However, it came with a Titanium catback exhaust. Unsure of the brand might just be a generic one as I can't find any markings on it.

Exhaust sounds amazing but it definitely vibrates the eardrums and drones.

Anyway, I have had tinnitus in the past before and I have managed to get rid of it by wearing earplugs at loud events and not using headphones etc. However, after owning this car just 2 months my tinnitus has come back with a vengeance. I can only attribute this to the new vehicle. I had a WRX V7 for 4 years before this and never had issues. It was a nice deep rumble but never droned and wasn't as loud.

So now I am having an issue where I am having to wear earplugs when driving the car to try get my tinnitus under control. It is not working yet and I am definitely getting concerned.

So now I am looking at a few options.

1. Getting a resonator welded into the midpipe. I know this will at least eliminate drone but it doesn't reduce volume.
2. Getting an entire new exhaust system and this is where I need some help. I want something that has a lower rumble to it as well as a resonator and isn't abnoxiously loud. I don't want to go factory as that is too quiet and I can deal with an aftermarket exhaust as my WRX had one but my current one is just TOO crazy.

What would be the best exhaust for a nice and deeper tone without drone? I am keeping the stock cats too.

Invidia Gemini. Rich tone with enough presence to let you know it's there but without being overwhelmingly loud. Stock muffler is pretty nice too--

A resonator will help with volume and drone. I used to install glasspacks as resonators in my cars, delete cats and run a straight through muffler and they sounded great(4 cylinder vehicles)

Do you have the factory cats in there still? Test pipes, high flow?

 

Loved my S-Tune exhaust. Had on both Z33 and 34. Stock-like deep sound but angry when on throttle hard. No rasp, no drone. Only problem is that it's NLA. Nismo brought it back for a bit a couple years back but discontinued again. Somewhere, someone has one but might only be JDM importers.

As an alternative, I've heard a couple of catbacks with a Vibrant resonator in where the OE resonator is supposed to be and owner says it fixed rasp/drone.

 

If you have a titanium SINGLE exit, adding a resonator will not be effective enough. I highly recommend selling it and buying a less expensive, stainless, oem type exhaust (Nismo S Tune, Fujitsubo Legalis R, Tanabe / Revel medallion) or for a little more volume, the new Z1motorsports Touring exhaust sounds really good, as well as the ISR single exit and Fujitsubo Power Getter single exhaust.

 

Here's a vote for the Stillen true dual stainless exhaust that has been on my '03 preorder track model for 17 years. One of my students at the Nissan Sport HPDE/track days had one and while doing a lead-follow exercise I noted how well this exhaust just WAILED at WOT! Beautiful tone and durable, lusterous finish. When my student had to sell his Z, I jumped at the chance to buy it! Haven't looked back since, and I agree that a single exhaust (while lighter for the race car) is a loud option. Wouldn't want that on a street Z.

 

Also if it is titanium, I've been told by my welder friends that titanium and steel don't mix well, so you'd probably want to find a titanium resonator unless you're welding in flanges as well to bolt the pieces together...
