Is this the charcoal canister and evap solenoid on the underside of the car covered by a plate? Has anyone replaced these items and had success. PIA to dribble gas in slowly and play with hose to fill up the tank.

There was a TSB that went out 5+ years ago about the EVAP vent tube causing issues and making it hard to fill at the pump. I think the warranty was extended to 15 years, but it's passed on your '05. I would start there.

But yes, there is a thin metal plate or splash shield that covers the rear EVAP canister. I seem to recall I had to trim it or modify it to work with my exhaust/diffuser.

The TSB Heel mentioned requires you to install some kind of a metal cover inside the gas tank. I did this repair myself, simply put, it's not a fun task. I'm not exactly sure how this metal piece that snaps onto a hose or valve in the tank works, but this did fix my issues with filling my tank beyond 1/2. I'm able to get 100% without the pump handle safety shutoff engaging constantly.

The Evap canister is located under the back right bumper corner. As Heel mentioned, there is a steel plate held on with 3x 10mm nuts that covers it. Once that plate is removed, you can access the canister. There are 3xHoses and 2 harness connections to it. If you need to remove the entire canister, there are 2x10mm bolts and 1x10mm nut securing it to the underbody (The nut might be shared with the cover plate). Be careful with the hoses, the rubber is old and could crack on you.

Just like Heel, I had to remove the steel cover to install the Motordyne TDX2 catback. I'm thinking about modifying the cover plate (relief cut) so I can re-install it. I figure Nissan put it there for a good reason and I don't think acting as an exhaust heat shield is the main purpose.
