Not sure on the build month.
I told the tech I wanted to drive him in order to show him the problem. He insisted on going alone. When he brought the car back it was obvious he was working my clutch. The car stunk.
He could not reproduce the problem so I insisted on driving him around. I took him for a ride and easily duplicated the problem. He said he thinks Im gonna need a tranny replacement.
As far as the problem what happens is when I shift fast from 4th to 5th the tranny grinds. Sometimes from 5th to 6th as well.
The tech asked if I had been leaning my hand on the shifter when I drive. I lied and said no...he said people leaning on it on 3rd and 6th causes problems...not sure I believe him.
As far as build date?....what numbers in the vin do I need to identify?

Btw, it's 82 degrees here in Greensboro, NC today. I had my first opportunity to drive around with my top down! It was a wonderful experience: full sun, music blaring, winking at other women, .... ahhhhhh.....

mine was replaced for a 3rd gear grind. Initially they said they would replace the pin and some other crap (see my post in repair forum from a while ago). But they called back and said Nissan doesnt repair trannys anymore, they replace them.
They didnt need to test drive mine, they took my word for it. How do I know? I told them and she said "i believe you, we had another z in here for that. I'll go ahead and order the parts." Then I drove home Brought it back next week for replacement. Took 4 hours and I drove it home full throttle
PS: Build month is in your door EnthuZiast. Mine is sept 2002

the "leaning your hand on shifter" thing is complete BS IMHO. I've done it to all my manual cars. The only one thats ever had a problem was the 350z
damn, I know what he was doing. Hope your car was fully warmed up before this. Remember, you're the one who paid $30k something and you're the customer. You can tell them you dont want it driven without you in the car.
PS: did they give you a new clutch? I got one

It stunk like he burned the clutch up...should I demand a new clutch?
THe only reason I didnt ask is because the GMs wife is my accountant...but if you think he could have done major damage in 3 mins Ill ask.

They should of given you a new one when they did your tranny. Given the new info about the ***** service guy, yea I would ask for one. If you want, file a formal complaint with NNA. They in no way, can justify a burnt clutch from a test drive. You didnt need to burn it up to recreate anything.

If I were you, I would've upgraded to a JWT clutch and flywheel so you wouldn't have to pay a $350 installation fee. I had my Z taken in last July for the drifting to the right TSB and I wanted to ride with the Tech, but the service manager rode with him instead. They took one of those E-pass tollway things and 21 miles more on the odo (I was freaking out for those 45 minutes, some scary moments).
