Default 350Z 5AT vs 350Z 6spd

My friend with a 6sp Z wanted to bet me $100 to race. Talking **** my auto is slower. Well good thing I didnt bet him. Couldve been a easy $100. We did like 5 races(roll, off the line). He couldnt drive for ****! I even slowed up to go even and still got him by 2car lengths to 70. Didnt beat me once or got close. Poor guy,I hope he doesnt race anyone

6spd Z owners shouldnt say they will beat me in a race. Until they know the facts. I hate ignorant people.

i've beaten a couple of **** talking 6speeds too...feels good doesnt it. haha in order to win they have to drive to perfection, but granted on the freeway they will eventually pull on us due to their 20whp or so advantage.

Its because of the axle ratio. 6spd-3.54 vs Auto-3.35 and the extra gear. A pro Z driver should be close with a auto.

JonsilvZ,

Would you mind sharing your driving style to get these fast times? I have questions like:

Were you in full auto or manu-matic mode?
If in manu-matic, when did you shift?

Any tips? I'm just curious

it is def. driver skill.
Its not hard to just floor an auto.
Now if the Z had a SMG type trans. i would get that, but since it doesnt, 6spd it is.

If you run from 0 and both cars are stock, definitively manual is faster. Think. Why the Track model only come with manual?

The Track model only comes with a manual transmission because it's the model made for track runs and autocross.

The manual tranny would be faster only depending on the following:

1. Driver skill. If the driver in the manual doesn't know how to speed shift, or has a problem shifting, then he's lost to the AT, which will shift quickly, smoothly, and at redline every time (at WOT).

2. Are you talking 0-60, 60 foot, quarter mile, top end speed? Depending on which numbers you're looking at or care about, the AT may actually be faster.

Manual will [always] have the edge without driver error in the 0-60 and 1/4 (it's in the gearing). Now AT's never make mistakes* though...

*missed shifts-wise

Your crazy, all drag racers want autos. Just look at how many LS1 guys with 6spds, are willing to swap to an auto for there 6spd and some cash.

Definitively, if you don't make mistakes, manual is faster, plus is more fun to drive, you have the total control of the car. If you don't want to make mistake shifting, you don't know drive manual or you drive mostly in heavy traffic go with AUTO, otherwise manual is more fun and faster. ( my personal opinion )

For the 1/4, its all about the automatic with a 'shift-kit'.. Most new cars, like the Z, come with one already (manumatic or whatever lol). A well built auto will smoke any manual transmission in a straight line. I own a 6mt Track and I personally prefer to have a manual tranny for everyday driving and spirited runs but I built a Camaro up for the 1/4 and went with a fortified auto. Can't beat an automatic w/ a ratchet shifter when all you do is want to go from point A to point B in a straight line, in a hurry.

6mt is more fun tho, auto bores me for everyday driving. Hard to find an auto that shifts hard and fast.

It's hard for me to believe an auto will hit WOT on every shift. My auto 5.9 Grand Cherokee doesn't even come close. I'd have to say the 6mt should smoke an auto (with proper shifting, of course).

btw: Motor Trend's tested track model pulled a 13.77 stock!

Feel cool? It's definitely liberating in terms of gearing selections on demand and I wouldn't have anything but a manual for a sports car. But I definitely DON'T look down upon the guys that drive AT's. I think they are as cool as us MT guys.

K how can you even compare the two, just because the auto acts one way in one type of vehicle by no way dictates how ALL Auto react across the board. I had an IS 300 auto yes it was laggy, I installed the electronic shift kit, which made a huge difference. I now have the Touring Model 04' Auto and it shifts even faster than my 02' IS300 that I traded in for this. I agree MT is a little cooler, but I live in San Diego, and shifting through 5-10 mph traffic sucks big time. Plus the wife has no idea how to drive and i wanted to be fair.
