engine sounds like crap at idle need your thoughts
after the engine is good and warmed up, 20 mile run or so, when i come to a light or at the drive thru I hear what sounds like the timing chain, kinda like a growling sound with a kinda uneven idle. I know the idle being rough for people has been dicussed before but what about the abnormally loud noise.
also i don't race, run hard all the time or not let the engine warm up before romping it, i guess i baby it : d
my wifes 4 runner sounds better and that thing is a 99 with 92000 miles
any thoughts before i take it to the dealer?
i like to sound like i know what i'm talking about in case they give me the run around
thanks in advance
search not working, so please don't type do a search

it seems he already has a grounding wires kit... yellow in color.
a total guess is that you hooked up the grounding wires wrong. otherwise, i dont have a clue.

It impossible to hook up grounding wires wrong and adversly impact the performance of the motor. Worst case, you just won't add any more grounding to the car and it will run exactly as it did before.
This is an obvious question, but have you taken it to the dealer to see what they say?
Your sig says you have a borla. Could it be a loose fitting that you just don't hear when moving?
Stick you head under the hood to see if you can see where the sound is coming from. That would help.

Mine does the same thing but goes away when you press in and hold the clutch. Gonna have it checked out when the dealer installs my new front tires.
Anyone know what this could be??

"Normal" my a$$, that's the dealers answer
He even looked at the exhaust and checked for any loose bolts
How could the world's top ten engine sound like absolute s&*t at idle, sounds good off idle and runs like a bat out of hell.
I just don't think a brand new engine should have such a loud noise, the rough idle I can live with
As I saw some one else write last night its like a tick tick tick noise
I wonder if the maxima or other nissans with this engine sounds like this?
Anybody have a newer nissan not a Z?
I'm lost

The noise zshadow is referring to, is the same noise I'm getting. It sounds like lifters. "tick a tick a ticka."
Happens at idle when car is fully warmed up. I have an appointment tomorrow. My car runs great from a roll, but idle sounds like ****.

mine sounds like dog **** (if dog **** made noise) at idle, but it is beacause of the stillen aluminum flywheel. Its almost embarasing unless your around people that REALLY know their cars, and they can tell what it is. But from the factory it made the noise you are describing, and it went away when i had a new JIC clutch installed. if that helps any??

spdu4ia, the sound zshadow and myself are referring to is not related to the clutch/transmission. Everyone here is well aware of the clutch chatter manual 350z cars get when the clutch is out, car is in neutral idling. But that is not the sound we are talking about. The sound we are talking about is coming from the ENGINE!
It sounds like bad lifters.

Im not sure if I have the same noise...but i 2 have a pretty nasty sound coming from the engine bay other than the clutch chatter...i originally blamed it on my injen cold air but now that that is off it seems that the metal intake tube was just amplifying the noise b.c. i can stilll hear it now that I am back to stock. It occurs at idle and on the roll, usually at lower rpms(maybe vibration related then?) Im clueless and the dealer just dicks me around but Ill see what they say now that I am back to stock...Prob blame the veilside lip haha

I have the same engine noise dissolved and zshadow have. Mine makes it only when warmed up and idle but it goes away after 10 seconds or so but will come right back when I idle again.
Dissolved, can you pm me what your dealer says? thank man.

dealer didnt hear anything unusual. All they could hear were injectors.
I also talked to my father (been working on cars since he was 18) and he said the sound is nothing to worry about. His old Z made the same sound. He said it is probably the timing chain (old Zs had timing chains to before going to belts)

humm, i had some noise with my car before. but it only happened with the AC on. turned out there was a tsb for the sc compressor or something. happened at idle, and when the ac was on accelerating from 2k-3.5k rpms.
dunno if thats your problem tho...
