Angry Drove over speed bump at high speed

Hi,

They have weird ways of controlling speed here as we have no speed limits and people drive like crazy. One weird way is to just put a speed bump in the middle of a highway with no warning.

So I was zooming into second gear yesterday, before reaching the redline I see the bump and I just ran over it at high speed. No contact with the car, but it was "boom"!! Nothing seemed abnormal after that. Do I need to take it and check anything?

Thanks,

MoZi

I did the exact same thing tonight. I'll need to take it a look at it in the morning to see any damages.

For all I know, the damages could be a bump in the exhaust piping.

Watch for alignment problems.

Same goes for potholes.

We have the same problem here in Chicago except instead of speedbumps, they're called pot-holes. And we're talking deep, knock the fillings out of your mouth deep kind of pot-hole.
Nothing will make you clench your teeth more than hitting one of these going full speed!

Ditto, and check to see if you bent a rim.

Seems like I hit a nasty pothole every time I drive my Z. With the stock suspension it sure feels nasty, but I don't think it's doing any permanent damage (knock on wood!). Speed bump is another story, though. I agree with rouxeny, alignment is the most likely thing to get messed up if it didn't feel like you scraped the speed bump on the bottom of your car...

In my misguided youth, I was driving my parent's 1987 BMW 535is and punched the gas as I approached a bridge that had a sharp drop-off at the end. Of course, I grabbed some serious air, but wound up bottoming out, which felt like my a$$ hit the gravel road. When I got home and turned off the engine, the oil promptly drained out onto the garage floor, since I'd torn the oil pan! Can you say $700 worth of damage plus towing (waaaay more than a broke high school kid had laying around) and driving privledges promply revoked?!!!

could blow a shock, be careful. if the suspension seems bouncy and springy; it might be something to check out.

of course with the Z, a bouncy springy feel might be hard to diagnose.

Yeah see if your car pulls in any direction and not going straight. Then you might have to take it in for an alignment.

Are you sure the "boom" you've heard was not caused by an anti-tank mine? I thought in your neck of the woods that's the way they controlled speed...

milanista,

The war ended in 1990, that is 14 years ago.

The place is akin to the French Riviera now

Hi MoZi, I was just kidding. Hope I didn't offend you. I'm glad to hear that Beirut is once again a nice (and quiet) place to be. It must be nice not having speed limits to contend with. What about crimes such as auto theft and vandalism? Is your nice Z safe there?

No worries my friend, I sensed that you were kidding with the smiley and all. It is just that the war affected us so much with a lot of loved ones gone and I just cannot count the times where I or a family member was about to get killed...so it gets touchy. But if you have serious questions about these things, I will gladly relate.

Driving is a pleasure here but it gets very dangerous. The highway at night is like a Formula 1 arena, no lanes, no nothing, and everybody drinks and drives (no street police that follow you for anything), wild stuff. Having lived in the US for 7 years, I came back here and it took me a month to drive well again.

No problems with auto theft and vandalism. It is tight here and small so theives have nowhere to go. These types of crimes are quite rare and crime in general actually. So the Z is safe, so was my old 993

Cheers,

MoZi
