Default vin #

again sorry the search doesn't work. but simple question. what or how does the VIN # thing work? i don't really get how carfax and stuff like that can use the Vin # and know what the problem is with the car.. is it like every single car has a different #, and every single thing (accidents, etc.) are recorded and somehow able to be seen by anyone or something? i guess im not making much sense, but for those of you that are on the same wavelength, thanks in adv for answering my question.

Everytime you file a claim with your insurance company, the VIN# is listed on a CLUE report along with what was wrong with the car at that time. When you run the VIN# it will pull up all prior accidents that vehicle was involved in.

Every VIN is unique. It's kind of like a Social Security Number for cars. Here is a breakdown of Nissan VINs that will show you how they end up being unique: http://www.courtesyparts.com/specs/vin.html.
