I just got through my breakin period and went to the dealership to get an oil change. The serivce dept guy told that there's no longer any breakin period and that the engine is broken in at the factory. He also told me to come back at 3750 miles to get an oil change. Being they're a dealership I'm always skeptical but I can't see how this works in their favor.
I wouldnt trust them a bit. Mine told me there was a break in period, and even if they didnt the manual says to. 1200 miles I do believe, and most get their oil changed at 500 miles to get the metal shavings out of the engine. I changed my oil at 1200 miles for the first time and I should have gotten it changed 700 miles sooner. I plan to change it every 3000 miles after that. And maybe the dealership was busy that day and it was his way of blowing you off, but I dont know your dealership so its mere speculation. He probably should have changed it for you anyways being that you were there and new oil never hurts
When i went to get an oil change at 1200 miles the service dept guy also told me that it was not necessary to get the first change till 3750. He did it for me anyway but who knows if it's really necessary or not. Like Pusha said i'm pretty sure it does say there is a 1200 mile break in period in the car manual and new oil can't hurt.
This is something I've heard from several people who have different cars purchased at different dealerships. But other places have said the opposite. The best example, my mother was told her 2004 Jeep Special Edition had no break in period, but my uncle was told by another dealer that his 2004 Jeep Special Edition had a 500 mile break in period. The way I figure it, following a break in period can never hurt the car.
