dry winter air I think, and the metalic paint on the handles. air running past it builds up a static charge, with no water in the air, it cant dissipate.

so far Ive yet to hear any cases of people blowing up at the pump. but if your grounding yourself and the car when you close the door, shouldnt be any problems when you go to pump the gas.

if your worried, touch the metal gas pump, itll ground you too. no shocks.

Saw a video of some girl who was pumping gas into her Jeep Cherokee --- she put the nozzle in and clicked the lever for the pump to stay, got back in her car to get something and came out to touch the gas pump and the thing exploded into flames!!!

I actually went to a store down here called Super Autobacs and they actually sold key chains to eliminate static electricity. So I guess this is a common problem if they are selling key chains for the problem. I think they have a website if any of you are interested in purchasing this key chain.

I get shocked with all the cars I drive, when I wear rubber shoes.
When I wear wood heel shoes, I don't get shocked at all with any car.

It was nothing to do with the Z.

There are gas stations around me that will not let you get back into your car until you are done pumping the gas. If you get in your car, they say over the intercom, "you at pump #4, please get out of your car until you are finished pumping". No joke.

I was told by a gas station attendent that if I didn't hang up my cell phone he wouldn't pump my gas. I guess he believes cell phones can cause a gas pump to explode. I was later told that it's not cell phones but static electricity that does cause many gas station fires. This is why they tell you not to get back into your car because the more you go in and out of the car the greater the chance of you building up a static charge.

You can read more about it here: http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/12/05/gas.pump.fires/

and here:
http://www.esdjournal.com/static/fires_files/fires.htm

scary stuff. heh.

It's hard to belive we've been pumping gas for 100 years without destroying ourselves.

(Sorry, but I'm fed up with the media hyping every crazy accident into the "deathtrap of the day"). My wife saw some stupid show about carbon monoxide poisoning and now wants me to install sensors and **** all over the house, blah, blah, blah...Lame, I tell you.

what i don't get is how does the whole thing turn into flames? like even if static electricity, isn't the nozzle part of the pump plastic/rubberish? i wouldn't think it would explode.

the fumes are what makes it burn, gasoline itself doesn't burn, the fumes do.. sparks can generate enough heat to cause fumes to catch and that's that.. (learnt that from the myth busters.. hehe they did an experiment with the cell phone theory, infact they found that most likely you will be in a bad position if you get out, start pumping gas, go back in the car, get back out, and grab the pump handle without touching anything else....)
