Default Question on 2-1 downshift

Someone said that the 2-1 downshift for the Z is not synchronized. He said I have to come to a full stop before shifting from 2-1 or else there could be problems.

Is this true? Thus far I have been shifting from 2-1 while on a roll without any problems.

Thanks,
Baron

Probably not true but there's no reason to ever do a 2-1 downshift unless you are stopped. You can get the car moving in 2nd gear from a crawl anyway.

You may argue that sometimes you need the most possible acceleration from, say, 10mph or so but I would argue that you will accelerate faster just fooring in 2nd rather than downshifting to first then back to second within a second or two and wasting all that time shifting back and forth. Plus regardless of syncros, I'm willing to bet you aren't rev-matching very well going down into first on a roll, so you are causing some extra wear.

When I shift from 2-1 about 20% of the time it has a lot of problems getting into 1st. Not so much a grinding, but it doesn't catch and feels like it is grinding

For all practical purposes do not shift into first, with a manny tranny... , unless you are completely stopped.

On my car, when you're rolling at like around 10-15 mph or somethin, the car doesn't let you shift from whatever to gear one, you have to stop or be under like 4mph to shift into it.

Can't you hit the clutch and shift to neutral, let out the clutch, and then give the gas a tap, then clutch and shift into the lower gear without having to worry about the sync's grabbing you....

That's better but you're gonna need a lot more than a tap to get into first at anything other than a stand still.

I'm going to call adudlt protection services and report all of you for tranny abuse. I've been reading a lot about that lately.

Why would you try to shift into 1st while moving? 1st gear is for starting off in, period. It's not something you gear down into! That's why they don't put synchros on first. Someone must be doing some very strange things with their tranny to be wanting to do that.

How many of you come to an absolute complete stop 100% of the time? Do you start off from second if rolling slightly???

I double clutch when going into first, reguardless. Anything wrong with that?

I'll never go 2 to 1 unless stopped. You just don't need to. In fact most of the time on flat or downhill I'll even start off from a stop in second.
