Question New Car Mileage: Virgin vs. Demo

Hi all - this is my first post.

I'll be buying a Z in a couple of weeks and I was wondering what constitutes a "demo" in terms of mileage? I'm probably sweating the small stuff here, but if a car has been out on numerous heavy-footed test drives, I feel that it might not be getting the most judicious break-in.

When the local dealer locates the car I want from one of his larger branches, I'd like to specify a reasonably low maximum exceptable mileage, but I'm not sure what number to set.

TIA

When I was younger, I sold cars. I had a demo like some other salesmen. I tell people never to buy a demo! Especially if it has a couple hundred miles on it. That means that a manager or top salesman is driving it as his personal car. We put in the cheapest gas that we could find and beat on it. Oil changes never happened. We had it for 4500 miles before we turned it in as a demo if it didn't sell. It was untitled and still considered new. You can get brand new one that is undriven for the same price.

Ditto.

No way would I buy a Z “demo”. I’ve read about too many people ‘abusing’ the Z on test drives and salesmen who show off in the Z.

And also ditto to dexter’s comments. I too sold cars in my younger days when I first got out of school. All of the salemen there were ‘kid’s. We all abused & misused everything we drove. We raced each other, all the time, everywhere. A good time was had by all, but I’d never buy a car from that dealership!

My Z had 6 miles on it and think that is about average. There was a thread a few months back about how many miles were on our Z’s when we bought them. You might do a seach. It was interesting thread.

But to answer your question, I’d only buy one if the mileage was in single digits (less than 10 miles.)

Good luck.

Best thing to do is ask for one which still has the orginal delivery plastic on. You might have to wait a while, but those you can be sure are 100% factory virgins. They wouldn't test drive a car with plastic on it. I was told mine had 3 miles when they got it, and when I went there that night, it had 9!

I ordered and waited my Z for 3.5 months... I went to the dealership to check it out as soon as it rolls off the truck with all the plastic on it... it had roughly 6 miles when I picked it up

If you're buy a car off the lot, I would ask to see the invoice so you know exact HOW LONG the car has been their. invoices' have dates. Explain to them that you don't buy sports car with al ot of miles on them.

Fact: Because a car has miles on it doesn't changes the dealers cost.

I do the break in procedure on my demo, but I know that most people do not.

Do not buy a demo.

I feel much better after reading this post. You guys have no idea how much fun I was made of by my family, friends, etc. cause I waited for one with 5 miles on it. I think it was worth it.

I felt the same way as you do Sr. Panza. Luckily I didn't buy the car Tuesday night; the dealer asked for too much, and the car has over 100 miles on it. I just hate the salesman said, it is still a new car, unless it has 4000 miles on it

I dont think I'd be comfortable with a demo sports car....

Maybe a demo sedan or truck or something, but not a car that most likely someone has had a little fun with....

In fact, nobody has answered the question yet, what constitutes a demo car, in terms of mileage?

I think everyone here is in agreement that anything over 10 miles is a demo in our eyes and not worth buying. It's kinda like someone having sex with your girlfriend. You can't use it if someone else has already soiled it.

I got mine with 6 miles on it. Virgin

The first Z I got had over 300 miles on it. We test drove it at 250 and p/u at 300. Drove it home (15 miles) and it never shifted out of second (5 AT). I called the dealer and they picked it back up 30 mins later. Result? It needed a new tranny. I said heck with that I want a different Z, I am not taking a brand new car w/ tranny probs. 48 hours later I was driving my new baby home, and she only had 4 miles on her. No probs at all now.

There are some demo z's on here that are dynoing 250hp+ at the wheels stock. Do a search. Just thought I would throw that in. IMHO, a demo is a car that has several thousands miles on it, doesnt have the sticker etc etc.

My car had 796 miles because it was driven from 2 different dealerships (this I confirmed several times). So technically, it wasnt a demo. Anyway, where else can you get an '03 touring for $31k new (all options but nav). Love it, keeping it.

Their is no way to classify what mileage is a Demo or not. One dealership might claim the mileage is from test drives, while other might call it something else.

Point being, if the car drives fine. Dont sweat it if you got a good deal!
