Question Axle or Wheel hop on aggressive launches?

I have noticed a lot of axle or wheel hop when launching at 2k-3k rpm. I'm no mechanic guru so don't know which it is or if this is a problem or just a normal thing? I saw that a few people commented that they were experiencing the same thing but didn't go into much depth with the subject.

If this is normal, are there any modifications one can do to have a smoother less jarring launch?? This is the first sports car that I've driven that the wheel hop is significantly noticeable..... All knowledge and comments are appreciated Thanks.......... Ricky

I think better tires would help

Default Aftermarket will have to fix it

The axle is "winding-up". Play in the half-shaft and suspension bushings might be causing it.

I don't think tires can fix this unless you get some with LESS grip.

Harder bushings for the suspension links might help. I have a feeling the aftermarket will address it if enough product can be sold to justify making and selling the fix.

I really haven't had a problem with wheel hop... you had the VDC off right?

Yes the VDC is always turned off when launching fast. I have the 6spd Touring model. Thanks for some insight -TB- hopefully we will see some aftermarket solutions to this.

Anyone else been having the problem?

Any current solutions? Thanks.......Ricky

One mod for the 300 to eliminate wheel hop is to replace the rubber sub-frame bushings w/ solid aluminum sub-frame bushings.

I haven't had the problem from a straight start but I have had a wierd reaction when I have started hard and make a turn such as from a left hand turn lane, if I take off fast and make the turn sharp the rear feels like it hops, it doesn't slide it is the wierdest thing, I have never had such a feeling before.

I had not done any burnout launches until the Auto-X last weekend. All the launches were nice and smooth for me, and I also have the touring 6-speed.

I just hope I am not hurting anything (other than the tires) by doing those kind of launches.

Do you think that would be the case for the 350? TY

at what rpm? Because when i do launches between 2K-2.5K i get a lot of axle tramp. BUt above 3K...i leave two nice black marks!

What would be a good launching rpm for the car? What did you use at the autoX?

I am not sure what the rpm was, I guess it could have been above 3000 but I don't think it was that high. I was just reving it higher than normal and kept the peddle going down as I let out the clutch.

Maybe your wheel hop had to do with the type of pavement you are on. I have done some fast starts in my Z and no wheel hope, just wheel spin! If you are on a bumpy road or an uneven road, every car will experience wheel hop.

the road was smooth as glass concrete. Like i said, between 2K-2.5K = wheel hop. Anything above is nice burnout. The wheel hop stops after 7-10 ft. Air pressures are recommended 36 psi all around.

I am having the same experience man! My launches range from 2.5-3k and i get the wheel hop. The roads have been smooth and on black top pavement. PSI on rear is 35psi.

Changing my oil tommorrow and will go out for a few test launches varying the RPM to see if it goes away at higher RPM as you said. I'll even let a soem pressure out of the tires to see if that helps........... Thanks for all the info fellas.........

The 300 suspension was design for neutral characteristics (i.e. anti-dive and anti-squat geometry). If the 350's rear sub-frame consists of rubber bushings, then it may possibly be the case.

I don't know the particular details about why 300's have wheel hop. As far as I understand it, the rubber bushings in the rear-subframe functions almost like a spring. It compresses/uncompresses during the "weight shift" and certain harmonic frequencies caused by "hard launches." ::shrug::
