A couple of months ago, I saw a post in one of the other forums of this board in which a member was looking for a remote start for his Z. I thought that was pretty useless since 1) you had to depress the clutch all the way just to get it to crank (though it could be bypassed) and 2) you can't start the car in gear or it would take off with no driver.

I was shocked and amazed at the number of people who posted and indicated that it would be a great idea and that my concerns were not valid because they never left their Z in gear. One of the first things I learned 24 years ago when I got my first Z was that you always left a standard trans in gear to prevent the car from rolling. The parking brake was secondary but I got in the habit of using it too.

Needless to say I'm not surprised that we don't see this kind of stupidity more often.

Hey I did the same thing last month. I've had the car for over a year too. What can I say - sometimes sh*t happens. I guess nobody else has done anything boneheaded before.

The Z parking brake is garbage. I'm going to have to adjust mine.

If I am on a steep hill, I always turn the tires so that if the brake does fail, it should just roll into the curb and stop.

I absolutely agree. I'm am constantly amazed at my friends who do not put ther cars in gear when they park, and rely totally on the hand brake. Blows my mind, especially considering how weak my Z's hand brake is. I have to pull mine all the way up until it won't go any further just to keep it from rolling backwards on my street. I always park in gear, but sometimes you want to leave the car running while you run into the house to grab something while a friend is sitting in the car waiting. With my Z, I have to just turn the car off and put it in gear otherwise it'll end up stuck in a bush or on top of a mailbox or something.

You want to park in the the gear that provides the highest ratio, which is of course going to be the lowest gear. This will provide the greatest stopping power. 1st gear is always a safe bet, although Reverse is often about the same ratio as 1st in most cars. I don't know if there are any sort of mechanical problems with parking in Reverse, though, so I just stick with 1st.

you want to leave it in a gear which is opposite of the way it may roll, if its gonna rollbackwards, pretty much any forward gear will work fine, if it may roll forward, then reverse is the best to use there.
