There must be something to it.. Or not... it's hard to say. Although Nissan Motorsports does have one available now. They sent it over to me to check out and put on my car as well. Part number 24080-ZGNDK list $149.95 forum price $120.00.

Insaneamine's grounding kit made a difference with my idle, beyond the +2 degree advance in timing and raising idle to 813 rpm with consult II.

In my opinion, the money spent on the grounding wires was well worthwhile.

I've never heard of a good reason not to ground, nor can I imagine one other than cost. There are certainly plenty of reasons to do it ASAP:

o no more off-idle lag

o no more vibration above 5,000 rpm

o quicker throttle response

I noticed these benefits right away. There are some dyno-supported claims of 4-5 bhp and up to 6 lb-ft out there, but few Z drivers would be able to feel such 1-2% gains with conviction. I don't, but that would be icing on the cake anyway.

My DIY grounding setup cost all of $29. You'll never match that return on the dollar any other way.

So you're claiming that your grounding kit eliminated vibration of 5K rpm????? What kool-aid are you drinking? How exactly do you propose that it's doing that? I'll buy (maybe) the off-idle lag, and possibly the throttle response improvements because those characteristics are directly attributable to variables that the ECU controls, but vibration?

There was an article written, and posted on this site somehwere that discussed exactly what difference the grounding kits made on the 350z. They ended up with a few more HP, and some other gains as well. I've never heard any cons about grounding the engine better. As for me, I have one on, and I like it. I did notice better throttle response, but not much else. It's a really easy DIY as well.

They have all sorts of colors...a little on the pricey side ($80-$90 or so...) but it sure looks cool, and I'll take the small gains from it.

Excellent. I was mainly looking to see if anyone had any cons at all. I should be getting mine this week right before my drive to Laughlin (first long roadtrip in the z)

I clearly observed a loss of vibration above 5,000 rpm after grounding, as many others have reported. I also personally observed quicker throttle response and resolution of off-idle lag, whether or not you buy them.

FYI, it's not necessary to be able to explain one's observations to have confidence in them. I'd guess that you observed the sun to set reliably in the west long before you knew why.

In this case, however, I do have an explanation. First and foremost, grounding improves the signal-to-noise ratios for most if not all engine sensors. If the sensors are delivering more accurate signals to the ECU, it makes sense that the ECU would run a smoother engine with fuel and air flows and valve positions better coordinated with cylinder positions. Done right, the 350Z's ECU-controlled variable valve timing results in an enviably flat torque curve, but it could also add roughness under the control of an ECU working off noisy data, particularly at high RPMs.

I'll have that kool-aid now if you have some.

Here's a link to the article I mentioned before. It's on another 350z forum, so you might have to be registered.
