Attn: People using the grounding kits.
I am seriously looking into getting a kit. I have a slightly rough idle and what I have read the grounding kit might help. Are there any cons to getting the kit that I should consider before going out and buying one.
the stillen grounding kit works fine for me...
as far as the idling, there's been lots of discussion on this forum about it. Mine idles slightly rough when it gets down around the 700 RPM range. some folks have attributed this to Injen CAIs (i have one, but i noticed slightly rough idling before i put it on). others think it's an air metering problem. others, like yourself, wonder if maybe the engine should needs to be grounded. I've just learned not to let it bug me. it's not too noticeable, the car doesn't stall, and it's not hurting anything.

Oh, I'll say it...Just cause I'm feeling fiesty....
USE THE F'ing SEARCH!!!! This has been discussed at least 1000 times by now.
That said, I noticed smoother idle when I installed my 5-wire insanemine kit, but none of the power claims that some make.
Hope this helps..

oh. leave him alone about the search, dude. no one likes to use it. I think that by now if you went back far enough, you'd find a question & answer about every bolt and gasket on the Z, but then what would be the point of posting anything new? I guess some folks just don't remember when their Z's were new and they had questions....

On that note, I think it would be a good thing to do to permit a 'date range' in the search so that at least you can see if similar posts have been made "recently".......Who knows.

I'll give you one con: I don't think any of the kits look all that nice. You take your nice clean engine compartment and start stringing cables all over the place, it's almost a detractor from the beautiful VQ35 / engine cover/ sway bar....I have a nice red kit on my Redline, but it still just looks 'wiry'.
There are a bunch of kits out there. I went with Z-Enterprises 7 wire kit. 7 wires seem a bit much, but it was recommended for the 5AT. The 7th wire actually attatches to the tranny housing. Most guys with 6MTs are going with a 5 wire kit.
What ever brand you use, get a custom cut kit. It will fit and look a lot better than a universal kit from Ebay. Also, be sure that they use 4 gauge wire and gold terminal connectors.
Here's a link to Z-Enterprises. I totally recommend it. I ordered on Friday, received it on Monday. Instructions come with pictures that let even a mechanincal misfit like me get the job done.

IMHO if you could get a smoother running engine with more power just by grounding the engine better, don't you think Nissan would have spent an extra $.50 and installed more grounding straps between the chassis and the drivetrain? Also, with all the electronic controls in the car, having a good and constant ground is vital, and the engineers at Nissan I'm sure made sure that there wouldn't be any differences in grounds and/or grounding loops in the car. As anyone measured for ground differences between the chassis and the engine with a voltmeter?
I believe the 350Z's in Japan are grounded from the factory (thuse the empty bolt holes on the motor), when they come to the US they "de-ground" them. You can buy the actual Nissan kit from Courtesy Parts, but I went with a vendor (whole lot cheaper).
Not sure why they removed the ground wires though.

The factory uses as little grounding as they can. Everything the designers want to do has to get past the accountants.
Is 5 or 7 4 gauge grounding wires overkill? Probably... Is spending $700 on a new exhaust to get 7HP any different.
Everything you do to your car should be for your enjoyment and satisfaction whether its maximizing the grounding system for $50 or pumping $10K into a forced induction setup.
ALL IMHO of course....

As for the performance of the car itself, it is debatable; I suppose I'd know myself, as once I have my engine tweaked and dynoed, I shall install the grounding kit and see how much a difference it'll really make.
But, obviously it won't hurt any, if installed correctly, as recommended.
