My dad for some reason was checking the oil in my car. When he put the diptstick back he missed the hole and jammed the dipstick between the hole and the "guide". (I question how I was ever conceived now). He thought it was in and left it that way. It was like that for weeks before I figured out what the burning smell was coming from and why white smoke was coming from under the hood.

I agree, it's a horrible design

Yup, I have yet to meet a 350Z owner who thinks the dip stick is a good design. You kinda get used to it, but it's still overly complicated just to do something as simple as check your oil. Makes me wonder if the designer actually thought no one would do it.

I can't tell you how much I love the looks I get when I'm at a gas station, trying to check my oil and I look like I've never been underneath the hood of my car before.

It took me 10 minutes and a flashlight to get my dipstick back in, i wont make that mistake again. good christ. i could have changed the oil in the time it took me to check its level.

This Dipstock is a PITA. The designer must have been a real dipstick. (Sorry). Anyway, I never check my oil level because of that god awful design. I change every 3K, and don't seem to be burning any oil. Surely someone can come up with a better (flexible) alternative.

Now you're talking. I'd pay money for a dipstick that worked easily. The factory design is just absurd.

I have wondered whether a round rather than flat stick would allow the oil to drain off more rapidly.

We have gas guages and they seem to work fairly well...Anyone know why no car uses an oil level guage? It would be simpler than the stick.

Is there any type of aftermarket engine oil display that you can add to the Z?

"Anyone know why no car uses an oil level guage?" Some do, and ours should.

For me... it's harder to get the damn thing out.... by the time it's done getting caught up on the way out....it slings oil everywhere once it finally comes out.... putting it back in is a breeze.... too bad putting it back in isn't what counts. This is a serious example of **** poor planning preventing proper performance.

Okay, one of you dipsticks(haters) come up with a ingenious solution for this problem. You'll be a millionaire (okay actually Nissan will rip off your design and you'll get nothing).
