I paid cash for my '04 Roadster because I wanted to be able to say that I owned the car and didn't share ownership with a bank or some other lending institution which leads me to this question. Can a person who has a lien holder on their car make major modifcations to it without the lienholder's knowledge or approval? Peerhaps that question should be a separate thread.

surprised to see how many people paid off their car in full.

did you guys drop your entire saving on the car.

Didnt think many people have 30K just lying around and if you did
would spend it all at once on a car.

I paid cash for my car - and it's closer to $40K in Canadian pesos.

To answer your question El Diablo, for me it is was possible b/c at 33 years old, I had the patience to pay off all the other things off (wife's Volvo, 1/2 of the house, all the cards) before finally splurging on myself. Like my house, I chose a car which I could easily afford and then have spare cash to renovate/modify.

In the case of my Z, I bought it used and spent the cash I saved instead of buying new on all my mods.

That's the kind of complacency that bothers me, but you are right, way off topic.

El Diablo- not even close to my entire savings. I figure pay them now or pay them more in the future. This way I am not paying a lender to use their money.

If you've never had the experience of walking into a dealership and negotiating full-bore for a car you want, achieving the price you want, and then writing a check for it, all the while watching them squirm as they try to convince you to finance it so they can get some of their money back, you haven't really lived.

Complacency? No, sitting and doing nothing in the name of peace while the Bin Ladens and Husseins of the world align against you...THAT is complacency.....I'll stop if you stop.

Sure you did...If you had 30K just laying around, you'd have bought better than a Z...I know I would have!

Not necessarily true....I could have paid cash for a much higher priced car than the Z, but I didn't. I bought a '95 911 brand new, paid cash, and it was a piece of $hit. I doubt I'd ever dump that much on a car again....that is, until the AMV8 shows up.

Actually, my point was that anyone with 30K just "laying around" would probably have that luxury because they were financially intelligent, and therefore wouldn't have 30K in a savings account earning what, 2%? Normally, people with 30K of spendable cash would have that money working for them somewhere else.

Anyway, NICE car...What is that?

Also, surprised to hear a Porsche labeled "piece of $hit". Unusual for German engineering. What didn't you like about it? What problems did you have?

It's Aston Martin's upcoming 911 fighter.

The Porshe had electronics problems, brake problems, suspension problems.....oh hell, it was in the shop more than it was out. When it was running right, I still enjoyed my '93 300ZXTT more, and the Porsche pretty much sat in the garage. Maybe I got lemon.....my wife's 2002 Audi A6 4.2 quattro has been flawless.

Paid cash for mine (well, wrote a check actually). Cleaned out quite a bit of my savings, but I really like the feeling of not having a payment.

Now, I have the C6 Z06 fund (or maybe the Lotus Elise Fund, or maybe the GT-R fund) well under way. We'll see how things look in another 5 years.
