West coast ports will reopen
West Coast ports could reopen by week's end under pressure from President Bush (news - web sites), who warned Monday that thousands of jobs could be lost and Americans will pay higher prices if the shutdown continues.
The nine-day shutdown of 29 ports has already led to layoffs, plant closings and increased costs for businesses in the USA and abroad. Bush, saying the economic health of ''every corner in America is in jeopardy,'' took the first step Monday toward forcing an 80-day cooling-off period that would end the lockout of 10,500 workers.

The reported problem is that even if the president ends the lockout it doesn't force the workers to work hard so in the past this sort of action hasn't helped much and I wouldn't count on cars or products moving off the ships at a fast speed until the workers are happy.

"Workers may need as long as 10 weeks to clear the backlog of goods caused by the port shutdown. Ships carrying food and other perishables will be unloaded first when dockworkers return, which could be as early as Wednesday."
