Default The Truth is out there

After complaining last week about the lack of information the activity the last 24 hours have been nothing short of an outright feeding frenzy!

This is really shaping up into and X-files type episode. Is Jmanz getting the correct information? Or is the truth a combination of numbers that add up to 562? Or do we just invert the number to get 295? Maybe in the one of the passages in the prophecies of Nostradamus will give us a clues? Or is this the result of some poster who is laughing at all of us bc we are all being scammed? Who gets to play Scully's baby? Anyway the storylines are endless.

In the end it's all about whether the car is going to meet our expectations. There is absolutely no question in my mind that the car will do so!

My advice, relax, have a drink, or a bong hit, or get laid. If your really lucky you get to do all three!!

You're post is very funny and I agree we just need to relax, however, here's MY X-file theory:

A while ago (can't remember when) Nissan increased the HP target from 260+ to 280+. We all know this, right? Well, if the 287HP number is to be believed then I have a hard time reconciling

a) Given that the first target (260+) was already "in the bag" based upon the Maxima engine, I feel confident that we can say Nissan has been very conservative with it's target estimates. So, if you agree with this, the only logical conclusion is that when they switched the number to 280+, they already had this in the bag.

b) Now if you accept the above statement, then would Nissan really leave the margin of error to just 7HP. Remember the SE-R Spec V and Maxima came up 5HP short, as did a number of other cars, such as the new Miata. And on more than one occasion (but not necessarily Nissan) the blame was directed at variations in production catalytic converters. So my point is this: If a 5HP oversight can occur that easily (we are talking multiple manufacturers now), then again would Nissan risk coming in at say 278HP. I say not likely.

c) Even if you accept the fact that they published the figure based upon 287HP results, then what has Nissan being doing since the web site number changed with all these different test cars we keep hearing about. Surely not just suspension tuning?

I know we'll find out in a couple of weeks but I thought it would be fun to get my thoughts down in writing. Certainly, the world won't come to an end if I'm proved wrong.

There's still another possibility that hasn't been mentioned here lately. It was well documented earlier this year that Nissan was easily reaching 300-hp on testing the Z, but they were having trouble meeting emissions requirements in the U.S. Now this may have just been rumor, but if it's not, then this conservative 287-hp number may be purely a result of a more restrictive cat and/or exhaust, right? So I know people would like it to not have to be modded to be what they want, but maybe an easy exhaust mod would really get it to the numbers that Nissan had intended. Just my thoughts...

Okay, I can go along with this. It fits with my current thinking that Nissan had (at least at one time) the HP figure far in excess of 280HP. Although, probably no more than 300HP based upon what Nissan has stated i.e. "[300+ you may see down the road, but not at the car's release]".

I know this isn't very scientific but I entered 287HP and 3188lbs into a 1/4 mile calculator. I came up with 13.8

I then went looking for cars that do it in 13.8/13.9. Here's what I found:

Porsche Boxter S 0-60 5.2 (5.4 highest)
Porsche 928 S4 0-60 5.5
300ZX TT 0-60 5.2 (5.4 highest)
3000GT VR-4 0-60 5.3
S2000 0-60 5.2
M Coupe 0-60 5.3

One thing i noticed Flyingscot:

In your post you refer to the number 287, of course if you invert the numbers you then get 278! AH HA!!

And you also speak about a 7 hp margin of error! Another AH HA!

Then I took your 1/4 mile time estimate of 13.8 and I added those numbers which come to 1+4+1+3+8=17, and 1+7=8.

Notice that your "7 hp" margin of error and your 1/4 miles times are the number 78. AH HA!

I don't know what this proves...but it's fishy.

Ah Ha! Fishy indeed. Now my eyes are finally open and I see a conspiracy at work here. Perhaps all we'll need is an Octane booster to unlock that mystery 315HP.

JmanZ did say that his contact at Japan told him that the car has 300hp and does 0-60=5.2sec. I think emission does play a big part on the hp reduction, that's why we are seeing 287hp...

I also think Nissan has tuned this engine with lower compression. If the car really comes with 287hp, 300hp is very easy to be obtained via simply modifications.

Just my $.02

Default Nirvana!

If you take the original HP number (280) and add the number on the license plates (562), you get a sum of 842! But wait! If you add the universal-love number (69) to that, you get an astonishing 911, the date which changed America as we know it!

Coincidence? Absolutley!

Nothing like forcing numbers to add up! You must work with numbers on a daily basis or something...I'm an accounting major, and *I* don't even do that kind of stuff. Hehe..

Well ZGiRL you just need to change your perspective on things...as the commercial says "think outside the box" or "change the para-dig-im"!

Or spend most of your college years in a relative haze, going to 7-11 at 3 am and eating the burritos bc your really, really hungry! Then it all makes sense.

Perhaps Nissan is setting themselves up to sell as much NISMO equipment as possible. If they know how to easily get the 350Z to 300+ HP then what do they have to gain by giving us everything they can on the stock car? They might as well hold back a little and sell more through NISMO that won't void the cars warranty. I doubt most people would buy/not buy the car for the HP difference of 287 instead of 300. The car's price is set so they might as well make some more money through NISMO. I am not saying this is a nice thing to do but since this is their first leap into the aftermarket in the US perhaps they are giving themselves breathing room.

I think that the only real number that matters is Wheel Horse Power. We won't know that until someone gets their Z on to a dyno. This will tell us if the car is underated or over-rated.
