Michael.
whats wrong with comparing a carrera S coupe to a Z?
fine, the reg Carrera weighs 3020 (~180 lbs less).

I was simply grabbing the 1st set of numbers I could. Note that I *did* use the heaviest Z (touring) rather than the perf/enthus.

The point is that every now and then ppl call the Z "ogverweight" - sure compared to an S2000. But nobody seems to call 911s overweight. See the irony!

911 is not mentioned as overweight because of the weight to HP ratio. For a 6 cyl car, 911 is pretty light.

Z (coupe) has to carry 11.3 lbs per HP
911 coupe has to carry 9.4 lbs per HP

911 - 315HP
911 coupe... 2959 lbs.
911 cab...3135 lbs.

Z - 287HP
Z touring coupe...3247 lbs.
Z touring roadster...3462 lbs.

hmmm wonder why the track version is only 22 lbs lighter than the touring even w/ the lighter wheels.

the lightest Z is base model not Track model. Track has VDC, TCS and other stuffs in it. If I remeber correctly, base Z is very close to 3000lb.

I think alot of times people are biased, especially comes to German cars. And I think they don't call 911s overweight is because it's a Porche, just like you don't hear people complain about E46 M3's heavy weight.

Anyway, it's so much easier to make Z lighter than make 911 lighter, since we have JDM lightweight racing proving body parts (eg. C-WEST, ING+..etc ) to chose from with more "reasonable price" than 911. To make a 911 lighter, well, let face it. It's hard to get the part, hard to find a tech that's good enough to work on it, and biggest problem is it's going to COST you $$$$$$, plus it's quality is not necessary better than the light weight parts we have for Z.

however the 911 weighing in at under 3000lbs has all the traction control and stuff. Maybe the 911 have light weight traction control computers?......

boxter IS a chick car.

Don't get me wrong, what I am trying to say is of couse 911 is lighter than Z, becayse 911 is alot more expensive than Z, and I am sure it used higher quality/expensive material on 911's body.

However, with that much of price difference, the weight between base Z and regular 911 are acutally not big. I really think Z is really bang of buck.

And if you really want to beat a 911 turbo, just get a Z32 TT, swap to a bigger turbo and tune it to 500hp and above. Then you can spank almost any 911 on the road.

Yep I think they're pretty damn ugly... that front bumper looks too busy. Plus those headlights just look akward on that particular model for some reason. Looks somewhat like a catfish. BUT... I do love the way the 911 Turbo looks

The C4 is more than just a straight line car. Although I wouldn't buy one for the pure sports car "value" it is, they are incredible cars. I'd take the C4 over the Z if the price was similar, but since it's not, I wouldn't spend 90k on that porsche (ps... i have a couple hours in the drivers seat, so it's not just mag numbers i'm talking). Overall a more solid car (obviously), but like i said, not worth 90k in my mind. I'm sure it's a beast at the track though.

Its kinda funny how some ppl say the Z is kinda flabby. BTW the HP advantage is "only" 27HP.

When ppl ask me how I like my Z,I tell them its the best thing short of a 911. I've been thinkingof getting a 911 when my Z lease is up - however, it seems that the performance upgrade may not be as large as I envisioned...

yup.

porsches to pass....
I dont know about your z but mine is a cow. At 3800 lbs, it weighs 600 lbs more than my friends convertible vette

The thread stated the 9114s not the 911. The 911 4s would eat us for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

actually the C4S has the same HP has the regular carrera plus 200 more lbs (probably due to the 4wd)....so the C4S shouldnt be faster except for the traction challenged situation like acceleration and turns.

I was actually on the freeway with a new C4S today. I was able to keep up with it no problem. So no, the C4S will not eat us for breakfast lunch and dinner..... (maybe just for breakfast )

I race with a C4S before, and I have no problem to keep up with it. It seems like they are not as fast as their name, just like boxter. And I got more look than most 911s out there, especially with my new rims.

Porsche 911 kick *** go-jo, appearance has become a dud. Z is a much sexier ride, no doubt. I took my wife with me to look at the 911 and a few other sportcars, she wouldn't even look at another once she saw the black Z. She's got taste, she's got me doesn't she?

Why? The Boxster resembles closer to what Dr. Ferdinand Porsche envisioned than the 911 as it's heritage is from the Porsche 550. It's just so unfortunate that 911 has a longer history and fan base. If the Boxster S came w/ the same amount of power as a 911 (and it is possible as both are flat-6 and share the same basic design), then which do you think would rule the open track?

Don't get me wrong, what I am trying to say is of couse 911 is lighter than Z, becayse 911 is alot more expensive than Z, and I am sure it used higher quality/expensive material on 911's body.
Here's something to ponder about: Porsche sports cars are race cars de-tuned for the street while Z cars are street cars that can be up-tuned for the track. (If you've never attended an HPDE or driven on the open track, then you probably wouldn't care about that)

Here's something else to ponder about: re-sale value. My buddy's lease payments on his 911 is lower than my 5-year finance payments and his 911 costs twice as much as my 350.

However, with that much of price difference, the weight between base Z and regular 911 are acutally not big. I really think Z is really bang of buck.
The rule of thumb I go by: every 100lbs is good for 10hp. I'd say the additional 30hp and 200lb deficit a 911 Carrera has over a 350 is very significant.

But I do agree that the 350 is a great value.

And if you really want to beat a 911 turbo, just get a Z32 TT, swap to a bigger turbo and tune it to 500hp and above. Then you can spank almost any 911 on the road.
Been there, done that. Maintenance on a modified (esp. to that level) Z32 TT will break your wallet to the point that you could have purchased a used 911 Turbo to begin with.

How about this comparison: $36k 350z Track model vs. $100k 911 GT-3 on a track?

Michael.

Boxter is a chick car not just because of it's power, compare to the muscular line of 911 or Z, it looks soft. Therefore it's a chick car.
If the Boxster S came w/ the same amount of power as a 911 (and it is possible as both are flat-6 and share the same basic design), then which do you think would rule the open track?
The fact is current stock Boster S doesn't have the same amount of the power or look as a 911. There are too many "If."

Here's something to ponder about : Porsche sports cars are race cars de-tuned for the street while Z cars are street cars that can be up-tuned for the track. (If you've never attended an HPDE or driven on the open track, then you probably wouldn't care about that)
I don't understand why you bring this up, because my point is just simply what you paid is what you got.

But since you mentioned about it. No, not all Porche sports cars are race cars de-tuned for the street. Currently, only GT1, GT2, and GT3 are race car de-tuned for the street.

I do agree Z is designed as a street car, and yes, it can be up tuned for track. There are only 2 cars from Nissan that are race cars detuned for street in recent years. One is GTR, and the other is R390 GT1.

The rule of thumb I go by: every 100lbs is good for 10hp. I'd say the additional 30hp and 200lb deficit a 911 Carrera has over a 350 is very significant.
However, the price differences between Z and a 911 Carrera are way more than enough to add 30hp and shave 200 lb from a Z.

How about this comparison: $36k 350z Track model vs. $100k 911 GT-3 on a track?

How about this comparison: $80k GT300 350Z (they do sell this to public in Japan when Z33 was first released) VS. $100K 911GT3 on Track.

I have read an article that compare z against 911. (by pro test drivers) . Speed, handling and chasis - both are equal. Interior or refinement goes to 911. Best value for money goes to Z (but in the performance corvette still has better value.) Looks?? I like z the best.

Really? I find porsche interiors sub par in their price range. Maybe it should be a tie.....
