no, i dont add octane boosters. And here in california, we only get 91 gas as well.

The manual says it requires 91, so 91 should be fine. Even putting 87 may be ok, you just get less performance.

And octane booster will not hurt your engine.

Octane boosters are basically a toluene mixture and very expensive. You can buy pure toluene at a paint supply store and add about half gallon per tank. This will boost your octane for much less money. There is a more specific formula that you can use to calculate the exact octane level you will achieve by mixing x amt. of toluene with y amt. of a certain octane gas.

A google search should lead you in the right direction.

Boosters are a scam, in terms the small bottle will boost your octane number by 0.0x, and you pay a lot... So if you have 91 originally you'll get 91.01 or so

Just get pure Toluene from your paint or home improvement store and mix it with highest octane you can get.

20% mix of toluene with 93 octane will give you 97.2 octane. That's 2 gallons of toluene for 8 gallons of 93 gas. That's what I do for autox. Difference in engine response is just incredible.

In my area, I'm gettin Toluene from Sherwin-Williams at 10.x a galon.

Interesting read. Gonna try that for the next dyno

For our Cali people with 91 octane...

(18 gallon * 91 octane) + (2 gallon * 114 octane ) / 20 gallons= ~93.3 octane per gallon.

FIY: toluene = 114 octane.

Octane boosters are a waste of money, unless you either:

A) Increase static compression ratio
B) Install forced induction (effective compression ratio)
C) Advance timing

only if you are boosting (turbo) and need the extra octane to stop detonation because of 91 gas. otherwise it is a waste.

i thought u would all like to know that i filled up with some 93 last night, and added some octane booster/injector cleaner by Rampage (power surge).

noticed a difference (butt dyno) pulled very hard even with a full tank. also idles better and at the last 500 rpms has like this spurt of power. now with a 3/4 tank left when i floor it from a stop, it literally jumps from 4k to 5k rpms and got sideways when i hit second and pretty good chirp into third.

i am pleased with it, although im not sure how good it is for the car. is it safe to use octance booster regularly or every other tank?

ok now im at a 1/2 tank, and the difference in power in very VERY noticable. pulls incredbly hard. i dont really know any other way to explaint his other than the car has never acted this way before i added the octance booster.

Most octane boosters say in the back if you can use them every gas tank or every other... as far as I read you can use most of them every gas tank...

Alright, before I destroy my car I want to get something straight. Pouring pure toluene into the gas tank 2 gallons at a time per 8 gallons of gas is ok? And I mean, buying it, walking out to your car that has approximately 8 gallons of gas in it, and while still at the hardware store, pouring those 2 gallons directly into the gas tank is ok and will boost the octane? This isn't some sick prank you tell noobs, like changing the water in the water fountain? Cause I've actually never heard of this till now and am very anxious to try it, so if it's no good...tell me before I blow myself up. Thanks.

Read the article and it seems agreeable...I also thank the person who posted it.

I, like all of you, are nervous as well to try it. We all drive an expensive toy and dont want to mess it up.

To the first guy that trys it (AND IS SERIOUS) you win. Simple as that. You got brass ***** baby!

I think we are all looking forward to the use case scenarios.

OK, I am real interested in trying this. I am going to cook up a batch over weekend and fire up the lawnmower. I figure if I blow it up I have a reason to get a better one and the Mrs. cant say jack about it!

Can't wait to see that biatch slice grass with Bruce Lee fury!

I used to run toluene in my Audi and it worked great. I had a K04 turbo upgrade doing about 17-18 psi, and adding toluene made a very noticeable difference, especially on hot summer days. No question about it. Purchased the stuff at my local paint store. I was a bit nervous the first time I added it, but later it became second nature. Never had a problem.

Will it make any difference in a Z? I don't know. From what I've read here on the forums it seems that California's low quality 91 octane can cause detonation problems under full throttle at higher rpms, especially on hot summer days. I don't have any first hand experience with this, though. I never seemed to notice any knocking in my Z, but there were times I most definitely felt the engine pulling timing under full throttle. I imagine higher octane would help that.
