Default Launching 5AT. Just stomp it??

Is it bad to just mash the gas all the way to the floor from a dead stop or is it too hard on the car? I've always wondered about this. I know that for tractions sake its usually better to dip in easy at first and once you're hooked up, to bury it. Anybody care to comment?

So that's a vote for don't do it. Why exactly is it bad? I'm not arguing, I am just curious. Too rough on the tranny, right?

tear it up = go really fast... not literally tearing the car up....

that's how I interpreted it....

just floor it, TCS will dial in the right amount of gas it needs to maintain traction.....

just floor it. YOu can brake and gas it in to launch. Sure you will wear your brake pads, but not your tranny.

Now, because you are auto...don't put it in neutral and pop it drive while reving. BADDD IDEA....just FYI.

i would recommend turning tcs off. in my experience it tends to over compensate and cuts to much throttle. if you leave it on be prepared to be disappointed; believe me i tried it at the track just for laughs.

Yes, brake and gas is the best way to launch it. Its called Brake Torque. Keep your left foot firmly on the brake. Then with your right foot, step on the gas and keep your rpm's at about 1500-2000. When you're ready to go just let go of the brake and mash the gas all the way. Now 1500-2000rpm is just an estimate. I haven't tried this on a non-turbo car before so i don't know what rpm is best to do this. I had an automatic Stage 4 WRX and i would bring the rpms as high as the car would allow me to during the brake torque (3000rpm) but this is because i have AWD. With RWD im assuming its different

Stomping the gas pedal on the AT will not hurt your tranny and it does not require any advanced skills. Launching an AT fast is a skill. Learn how to brake torque correctly to get the fasted launch.

Curious...why would brake torquing wear down one's brakes? Everything is kept at a standstill, after all...

It does not wear anything out as long as you're not moving with the brakes being pushed

I use to have a 280ZX Turbo with a 3 speed auto and I would powerbreak the car to about 3PSI I would take it up as high as I could before the tires would break lose Im not sure what RPM it was but as soon as I hit that magic PSI reading I let off the brake and floored the throttle

I was told that it's a bit hard on the tranny.

It is hard on the tranny. You are putting stress on it and heating it up pretty good. Do not brake torque all the time because if you do, say goodbye to your tranny

brake stands do heat the torque converter pretty good. it will slip, but it wont like it. at some point in the RPM range itll lock together and youll just start burning out. dont brake launch long, brake, rev, go, as quick as possible.

StarcraftBW thanks for the information, captain obvious.

That is not what he is asking about...

So is brake torque technique bad for your tranny AND brake pad or what? :O

it doesnt do anything to your brakes. but it is stressful on your tranny. short periods of time it probably wont have much of an effect, if you hold it for an extended time the heat could get to it.

Actually it's only hard on the torque converter http://auto.howstuffworks.com/torque-converter.htm
unless you are power braking in a MT which is also possible, but IMO is a dumb thing to do.
