SUBWOOFER choice for NON-Bose System

SUBWOOFER choice for NON-Bose System
What type of sub will fit perfectly in the enclosure behind the driver seat for those w/o the Bose System...also, is true that the speaker needs to be "free-air" style...I have a custom Kicker L5 box in place of the spare tire but wanted to know of options for factory placement...thanks for the info...
