Default 276hp vs 287hp...what did they do?

The Japansese, Australian and NZ versions produce

276hp (206kw)
267ft/lb (363Nm)

The US version produces

287hp
276ft/lb

So what do you think Nissan did to make the difference. Or are they just lying about the Japanese power output to comply with the Japanese regulations?

Anyone any ideas where the 276/287 switch is hidden?

One thing that makes me think that the power difference is real are the times that people get...I haven't seen anyone quote a 0-60 time in the 5s for a Jap version..mostly they are half a second slower or more, some are even saying 6.7 for 0-100 -- even allowing for the 0.3 sec difference to 100km/h that's still a difference.

Another thing that makes me think the difference is real:

Australian dyno runs of stock engines seem to produce 150-160rwkw or about 201 to 215 rwhp

This compares badly to US stock dyno runs of 230-240rwhp, even allowing for dyno differences.

they stuffed a dead cat into the intake as a filter, they have an excellent recycling program

Actually it's BHP vs HP.

That's a 30rwhp difference, whereas the official claims are about 11rwhp different. Doesn't make much sense.

Unless the American Z is getting some super wonderful drivetrain that the Japanese and Australian guys don't get, that happens to be less lossy, I'd be very suspicious about dyno results that different between countries.

I have read, on different forums, that American dynos tend to be a lot happier than Australian ones. Its definitely a possibility too.

Then again, when I was talking to the guys at Croydon, they said that they saw some stock Z33's hit 170rwkw on the dyno, because the drivers happened to thrash the **** out of them during the run-in period (and, please, lets not start that argument in here too). On the day, there was a Z33 with an exhaust that hit about 160rwkw.

That and 10hp and 10lbs/ft of torque shouldn't make a second of difference over the 0-100km/hr (or about a 15% improvement in acceleration), all else being equal.

Actually, the "hp" that the US use and the "hp" that Japan uses are slightly different.

Japan uses "ps", which is some standard France worked out for hp (why they didn't stick with the SI units for kW is beyond me) and its not equal to the hp that America uses.

However, the torque and 0-100 times don't make much sense to me.

if you scroll all the way down on this page...http://home.att.ne.jp/theta/kezuka/

on the bottom right.... it compares the japanese intake duct and the american one....

the smaller one is for noise regulations i think....

that may account from some of the HP lost. Maybe they have other restrictive noise cutting stuff elsewhere in the car as well. Exhaust maybe? or the cat?

Thanks for that.

Could someone please measure the size of the US Intake duct and post it, preferably with a photo. I will take a photo and measure mine...it will be interesting to compare them..

(I was also planning to remove my cats as they are not needed here in NZ)

The major restrictions is the exhaust and to minor extent the air intake duct. Yes the duct is smaller, from what I can recall it's about 30% smaller then the US one.

To find out the answer all you had to do is search the australian/nz forum on this board.

Yeah I suppose my one is fairly quiet...the engine sound is louder than the exhaust. So, I am thinking that a nismo exhaust and CAI will fix that
