Default another one bites the dust

I am sorry to report that I have gone over to the dark side. I have been waiting for my Z for 5 months and it's still nowhere in sight. While I was waiting I was also weighing my options. I looked at the Z06, M3, Boxster S and the S2000. All are top notch cars and I think the Z is right up there with them.

Anyway like I said I have no Z in sight (I was expecting it in Sep around my B-day). So my dealer is no help. He sais "I'll let you know when I hear anything" But I don't really believe him. It could be tomorrow or it could be December for all I know.

So I see a 2003 S2000 in my color (silverstone).

Long story short I am now a proud owner of a lawn mower powered roadster. LOL

Before you go on about how I could have waited a few more weeks or whatever. I know all that. I Think I would have loved the Z in december, but that doesn't take away from my loving the S2000 now.

I have a secondary reason as any married person can relate to. My wife also likes nice cars as much as I do. So she sais I can get the Z this year and in a year or two she gets a S2000 or some other drop top. Or if I get the S2000 for myself this year than in a year or two I can get another car and she will take over the S2000. So it's a win win situation. Or at least that's what I am telling myself.

Now in a year or two things will be heating in the sports car market, the new M3, C6, Supra, RX-7, 350Z tt?? who knows what. Also the 350Z is not going anywhere if anything it may get a few tweeks.

Anyway I may not be spending as much time here, but there still may be a Z in my future.

Let me say that so far the S2000 is no rocket ship. (I am keeping out of VTEC for 1000miles). I am going to slowly work up to the peak hp.

What I like about the S2000 is its light weight. I am not saying the Z is a fatty, but if I you gave me the choice of a 350Z weighing 2800 lb but with only 240hp. I would say giddy-up.

Holy Cow! The gas-passer bows out!

The S2000 is a great car and you're right, it is a win-win situation. I personally can't imagine having waited for so long and not sticking through to the end. Admitedly, I got my car almost earlier than it was promised, so I shouldn't talk.

Best of luck, nice to have a drop top.

By the way, the Z IS a fatty.....

I really will miss all the extra doo-dads on the Z, trip computer, TC/VSD, tire pressure monitor...

The S2000 is a simpler car. It's like the Soup ****. Like if I say but can't I have a slice of bread? And he sais: "No soup for you..."

But the soup is so good so we put up with it.

Also the S2000 will ensure I don't put on any more weight. If I do I won't be able to fit.

Both fun cars, right? That's what they are designed for.

Default In same situation

I am in the exact situation you are in. I can get an S2K now, car I originally thought of getting, or wait for my Z. I eventually will have both. I looked at it this way, the Z is a brand new design and won't really change much for a couple of years, while the S2K has been out for awhile and is due for a major change, I believe in the next couple of years. So with that, I will get the Z now and relish in its newness, then in a couple of years I'll have enough saved up for the "all" new S2K or whatever they decide to call it. I just didn't want to get an S2K now and then Honda comes out with a new version a year or two later. Thats what I like about Honda, they are pretty predictable, every four years and a new version. Well thats what I am planning to do anyways, but every time I see an S2k its tempting. I must be strong. Anyways, have fun with your S2k, its a great car. Guess you'll be heading to the S2k boards now. When you do, say good things about the Z.

I test drove the S2000 before choosing the Z ( I was still trying to hold out for a M3).. the main thing I didn't like about the S2000 was simply the convertible.. the roof line was too low for me (nearly 6' 2") so looking at traffic lights when the roof was up was a *****.

The dealer actually let me test drive a brand new one.. Of course I read prior you gotta shift up in the 7500+ range.. so of course I did =) The car is definatly quick.. but doesn't push you back any.. even after VTEC.. I didn't notice much 'boost' with the VTEC and I was taking it up over 8k RPMs.

So it definatly didn't have that V8 blow you away.. and the convertible is what pushed me away from it (I wish the Z had a sunroof =/). But if you are happy.. sweet! I'm still waiting for my Z.. supposedly first week of nov!

The s2000 I drove is still in the showroom too.. they were supposed to be in short supply still..

F**k that "darkside" ****. The Z is a great car and a tremendous value, but it ain't a religion. Have a load of fun with the Stook. It's a great car, but I hate ragtops.

There's a Honda in my garage right now so I'm definitely not some blind, marque worshipping *******. Just don't turn into one of those Honda Über Alles asswipes we run into from time to time.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the support. Silverstone has returned for 2003 so that was a stroke of luck getting "my" color.

I know a redesigned S2000 may be waiting in the wings, but as can be told over and over again, sometimes the sequel is not as great as the origonal.

I know all about how pokey the S2000 can feel. But when I test drove a pre-owned model previously and broke off some redline shifts I was definatly pushed back in my seat.

I am not saying the S2000 is better or faster than the Z and I know that in most situations the Z is faster. But I have seen a few 5.2 sec times for the S2000 reported in magazines. My friend remembers a 4.9 sec time. Usually the Z has a higher trap speed so I'm sure it would be quicker to 120 mph or whatever. But in a stoplight race it will be too close to call. IMO.

I don't think the S2000 will undergo any major design changes. Honda is pretty predictable in that they roll out a new version every few years. There are exceptions though, primarily the NSX and the old Integra. Those were kept around with minimal changes for a long long time. Hopefully, but I doubt it, the S2000 will not follow that path.

Rai:

Sorry to hear that you're changing your mind. In the end, you need to do what's right for you, so if the S2K works for you, then go for it, brother.

Speaking from experience, I know the wait can sometimes never seem to end. Give your decision some serious thought, because I can tell you -- once the wait is over, you'll forget about all the teeth gnashing you went through.

Best of luck.

Certainly the s2000 will be a rarer species. Correct me if I'm wrong but only 5000 are produced yearly whereas 30,000 Z will be produced yearly. Honda makes 60,000 Odyssey minivans per year and I see ALOT of them in southern California. I predict I will see ALOT of Z cars in a few years so enjoy the Z exclusivity while you can.

Well I hope it all works out for you I don't know your wife but I know mine and she would say that just so I would shut up about the Z and get a car already after the long wait and hearing about the Z, or you know how wives can be, very fickle and in a year or two the whole story might change and she would want a Volvo station wagon and it would be your fault.

You plan to mod your S2000? Must be vexing that you could've gotten the @2000 way back in summertime. I went through the same thing, but by the end of summer, I figured I'd wait it out. Plus my very good friend has a 2000 so I didn't wanna be a copycat. Anyway, you got a good car regardless, hopefully you'll stick around here

I plan on some modding, no forced induction. Something like intake and exhaust and stereo.

I really didn't want to buy in the fall/winter. In fact I may not get much drop top motoring. But I had this itch.

I sold my BMW Z3 almost 4 years ago, and have been regretting it ever since. In that time I have been driving a Trooper, a passat and an escort

Now I have a sports car.

I will still come and contribute to this board, and hope to see a lot of Z out there in my travels.

Isn't it great that there's no flaming here? Good for you, Rai, I think the stook is a pretty amazing car too. Besides, now you'll be ready to buy a Z when the higher performance one comes out in a year or two (speculation on my part, they gotta keep sales up)

congrats with the S2K, it's a great car. I test drove one while waiting for my z and was considering get it if I didn't like the Z.
But the Z was just to good of an all around sports car. Smoother for touring quite when you want it to be and faster with out dumping the clutch.

But after driving the S2K I have to say it is alot more fun to drive and hey it's a convertible.

I'm getting a S2K next year unless they release a new RX-7 or miata with a rotary because you can't beat the feeling of that compact cockpit "f1 like" and reving at VTEC. The car is made for sport driving no frills just pure fun. But it's not a car you want to drive every day.

I'm hoping they will make some changes for 2004.
