Gearing on the Z
One thing I've noticed about my new Z is that I hit the top of 1st gear VERY FAST...getting there is very easy (which is good I suppose) - kind of a pain when I'm racing someone and have to shift so soon.
Wondered if anyone else felt that way.
Is it beacuse they gave it 6 gears and they are all shorter because of it?
Is this actually a good design?
Figured having taller gears would make for a quicker acceleration - depending on how fast you want to take it, of course.
I mean, if it takes 3 gears to hit 100mph, does it really matter when the shift points occur?????

I believe it the 6 speed is made to take full use of the engines power. Our 1:1 gear is 5th, so its not like we get 2 overdrive gears.
I'm not sure what the top end of 3rd is, but I would guess the gearing would be set to max out 0-60 times by harnessing all power from 1st and 2nd by having you reach 60 near the high end of 2nd gear. For the quarter mile it's probably somewhere around the high end of 3rd gear.
If you didnt have to shift to 2nd gear to get to 60, then there would probably be some wasted power on the low end. If you had to hit 3rd to get to 60 then you'd lose time on the clock due to shifting.
I haven't done much timing and shifting but I would bet that to get the most speed out of the Z from a stand still that you would be best to use all the gears to redline.

thanks---yeah i guess what i'm really getting at is the time lost during a shift. of course, if you're good, it's miimal...and you'e right, sorry, 4th gear needed for 100mph in the stock Z...
To be honest, there are times when I skip gears since they are so close together.
Entering the highway I will jump from 4th to 6th. Leaving my neigborhood I will jump from 2nd to 4th.
