Bill-

Don't worry about it too much - there is an emissions sensor for the gas cap - if the cap wasn't closed properly or (or the cap is bad), it will trip the sensor and cause the light to go on. This is the most likely cause and is easily corrected.

Thanks Ethan! I'm quite a ways from the dealer and 'can't take it in for anything minor.

BTW - Does anyone know if you can buy a decoder for the Z and about how much it would cost?

Will unhooking the battery reset the thing?

Yep, this happened to me at about 1500 miles. If you dont turn the gas cap 3 or more times, it will lose pressure within the tank and trigger a CEL.

Did the message go away by itself or did you have to get it reset.

Is the sensor on the gas cap or in the tank itself? I would think the later.

Default Service light

came on around 850 miles. Still driving OK. But, I did notice on 2 occasions that when I went to gas up the cap was barely tightened. How can this occur when I tighted the cap to 3 clicks after gas. The roads are not that bad here.

The light stayed on all yesterday and this morning to work. I tightened the cap and started the car up on a coffee run- no light.
Just to pass on a few things related or not, the light didn't come on after fill up until the next day and it appears that a cold front can trigger it so don't expect things to happen right away. The
whatever seems to reset itself when you tighten the cap so there's no need to disconnect the battery. In my case the light reset itself a little too quickly (after tightening)so it may have been a combination of the outside temp heating up AND tightening the cap.
Thanks for everybodys tips!!!

Default Light came on early also..

Yeah my light came on early & I took it to a service department & they ask me about the gas cap thing also. We did that thing a few times, but it would randomly come on & stoy on at will even after I shut off the car. When they fixed it, the reset the codes or something like that. Now lets see if I see it again, I barely have 2,200 miles on it now..

Talking Service Engine Soon Light

I had a similar problem with my car. Turns out the ECU had some plastic shavings in the socket that connects the wiring harness to the ECU. Once the service guys at the dealership fixed that the light hasn't come back on. I had less than 200 miles on the car when that happend and have put 1500 miles on it since with no problems.

Default Oh, cool..

I haven't seen that problem in awhile myself, but then again, I haven't driven my Z that much since I had it serviced for that problem. Been outta town & trying to get around without having too many delays from people stopping me to ask questions & getting stopped by the local police just to look in my car & ask questions also about the car.
