Default third gear grinding

hey guys. just bought a z not too long ago and everythings been cool. but yesterday i noticed when i shift up to third gear, i would sometimes feel it grind a lil bit. 2nd gear does it too but not as much. anyone have this problem?

should i take it to get serviced?

oh and its under that 36000 mile warranty so does it cover it and do i only have the option to go to the dealership i bought the car at to get it serviced under the warranty?

i would appreciate some quick tips cuz if its something that can lead to a big problem, i wanna get it fixed asap. thanks.

are you rev matching, or just shoving it into gear? The synchronizer bearings basically make the gears match speeds so when you shift into gear, it wont grind. If theres a big RPM differential between gears (i.e. you push the clutch in, let it fall to idle, and try to shift into a gear at 4000 RPMS) it takes longer for the synchro to do its job, and if you force the issue, it'll grind a bit due to the gears not being the same speed. Try rev matching, see if that solves the problem

Take it to the dealer but they will have to replicate the problem in order to fix it.

The third gear grind will only get worse, especially in cold weather.

I would definately try the rev matching. From what I've read, Nissan will replace your transmission with a refurbished one, which has some different component material (steel instead of copper).
I took mine if the dealership and they had to order a new transmission, but meantime it hasn't grinded going into 3rd gear because I am revmatching when I take too long to shift into 3rd...so I will not be getting the replacement transmission.
Good luck.

I have the grind when i downshift into 3rd from say 5th or 6th at 50 MPH or higher. It never used to do this....i took it to the dealer and technician's response was "you shouldnt be down shifting into 3rd at 50MPH". I was like its a freaking sports car...it will do almost 90 in 3rd so downshifting at 50 MPH should be well within its capability. No dice. They wont mess with it.

i have an apt in ktown but i live in glendale too. and yeah, i dont plan on modding the z too much...

the reason i got the z was cuz my old car was attracting too much attention from the cops.

its a 2001 corolla.

so yeah... if anything... ill just do minor mods. nothing too crazy :P
