I am 12 and have a Z!! I payed for it too!
let's see, no other expenses?
1. car insurance @ ~ $3600 a year
2. water, phone, cell, electric, cable @ ~ $75 a month
3. tuition @ ~ $5000 a semester
4. rent @ ~ $300 a month
5. books @ ~ $500 a semester
THINGS MY PARENTS DON'T AND SHOULDN'T PAY FOR
that's roughly $1591 a month
i make about $700 a month (class: 8-4, work: 5-12 the absolute most i can do) + loans and scholarships cover $1000 a month because i got good grades
that leaves about $ 100 spending $ that most of goes to savings for wheels and tires
now Chicken, don't tell me that you're let's say 30 or 40 and after all your bills you only make $100? If so, I appologize and you're right. But is raising kids and getting a 30 year morgage a good idea on a McDonald's manager's salary? Or do your mommy and daddy help out?
not trying to hate bro, just to make you realize that not all of us youngens who own one got it from mommy and daddy but instead worked our asses off instead of partied all night like our peers. so try to show even a tiny bit of respect and i'll be happy

maybe once i'm not attending six classes a semester i'll have time to get a real job and then i will be paying for my own house and health insurence and ect...
what were you doing when you were 19 besides paying for "water, electricity, cable, telephone, cellphone, and all the other 1,000 bills and taxes that seem to come every month."?
look guys, i'm not trying to look cool or anything because i paid for most of my own car... i'm just sayin that it wasn't as easy as many people here seem to think... you think it's harder to afford one when you're older? if i could work a 40 hour week right now to pay all my bills, i'd gladly do it but i go to this place called a "university" which will help me get a job that i can work at to pay all of my bills... untill then, thank mom and dad for covering the things you do

You say "I'm not trying to look cool or anything because i paid for most of my own car.", and yet, if you take a few seconds to look at it, you didn't really pay for most of it at all....
A) Your parents gave you 5K, that leaves 21K
B) You sold a car that you bought for 5K for 11K?? Sounds like someone either showed you some big-time charity when they sold you the car, or you ripped off some poor unsuspecting sucker for better than 6K. In any case, I don't see this as YOU contributing that 6K to the purchase of your car....But let's say for arguments sake that you *earned* the initial 5 grand to purchase that car and you weren't "helped" with that purchase also (in which case, your parents actually gave you the 5k listed in A above, plus the 5K to buy this first car, and resultingly, the 6K in profit that you made on it's sale....now the "'rents" would ultimately have *given* you 16K).
So far you've actually contributed 5K.
C) You emptied your savings account to contribute another 3K (must be nice to be able to empty your life savings into a car....My wife would slice off something important if I did that). Now you're up to 8K in contributions.
D) Did some naughty things for the other 7K??? Well, since you won't tell us what those "naughty things" are, we can only assume that you're either a criminal, or at least morally corrupt (as might be indicated by your sale of a car for 6K more than it was worth when you bought it). In my eyes, that doesn't count either, since you obviously didn't WORK for it (or you wouldn't be hiding it's source).
So,
Your contributions: 8K
Parental contributions: 5K
Contributions from "questionable sources": 13K
You payed for less than 1/3 of the car, which hardly qualifies as "most", AND I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt that the 5K that purchased your first car was a result of your actions. If not, then you payed for 3K of your Z, which works out to just under 12%.
Yep, sounds about like what we've all come to expect.....
Is it so hard to understand the animosity?
It would be a dead issue if you either a) didn't discuss the finances behind your car (because nobody really cares), or b) got real and said "I'm a lucky kid because my parents, through various means, basically bought me a Z."
[/RANT]
ouch
i got owned...
i forgot to cound that in, my parents did pay $1000 for the old car the rest was inheritance. i didn't rip anyone off with it, just bought it off an 87 year old widow who had it in a garage. it was a mint condition 88 C4 corvette with a bored out lingenfelter engine and a fully custom callaway twin turbo setup. trully a dream car. i do miss it
i do't see where you're getting the %12 but you still made some good points....i think...
so my parents gave me $6k overall if that makes you happy?
the other questionable stuff was not that bad, i never scammed anyone, lied, cheated, or hurt anybody. no need to discuss it.
man, people really do hat a lot on a 20 year old who got a lucky break...damn man...i do have some amazing luck though, survived a war and everything...sorry guys, i wish everyone had the same fortune as me but i can't make that happen
work hard and focus and maybe good things will happen to you

These kinda threads annoy me just as much as the one's it was started about.
I am 19 now, was 18 when I bought my 2003 Mach 1. I did have my parents co-sign with me (which I am grateful for) but besides that I actually pay for everything. Not only do I pay everything for my car, insurance, etc... but I also buy my own food and give my parents money each month (not really RENT... just money I give them... ie they wouldn't kick me out if I missed it by a week). I pay for college on my own also.
I work a full-time job, go to school at night, and haven't been to a real party (alchohol and sex going on) EVER in my life.
I work hard, pay my bills, and enjoy what I've got. How is this different from older singles?
Note: I do agree that there is a lot more to worry about when you are married... that is why I said singles above.

My dad is 76. I took him for a ride soon after I got my Z. He thought I was crazy, he said he couldn't believe I paid so much for a car that rides like a lumber truck!

What apparently escapes some younger folk is that we all pay/paid for the Z. We did it without mommy and daddy's help, they didn't pay $7,000 down to match our downpayment. We know, you're proud that you're paying for something since, for the last 17 years, you haven't paid for anything and we're all pround of you Sparky.
Not only do we pay the monthly note on the car, we also pay for insurance, and the $2,500/mo. mortgage on the house that has a garage that the Z sits in, snug and warm at night. We also pay the water, electricity, cable, telephone, cellphone, and all the other 1,000 bills and taxes that seem to come every month.
We pay for the clothes we wear and the washer that washes them. And when the washer breaks, we try to fix it ourselves. And once we've taken it apart and can't get it back together, we call someone else to fix it. And when they tell us we're screwed and it can't be fixed, we go to Bob's Washerama and buy a new one. Not the cheap one that men would probably buy, but the front loading kind with the window like at the laudromats that costs more than it should. Why? Because our wives want it. And they also want jewelry, which we buy to make up for the fact that we spend so much on modifications for the Z.
So you'll have to excuse the fact that no one cares that you pay for your Z, because no one gives a rat's donkey. We all pay for it (and everything else), big whooopie. Only difference is that we think you're nuts as you're spending money that you should be saving so that one day you too can pay for insurance, and the $2,500/mo. mortgage, and the water, electricity, cable, telephone, cellphone, and all the other 1,000 bills and taxes that seem to come every month, and the clothes you wear and the washer, and the front loader at Bob's Washerama, and the jewelry because you spent so much on modifications for the Z, etc. We also wonder what the hell is wrong with your parents (unless the are filthy rich and just gave you the car), but that's a whole 'nuther topic, and honestly we don't care about that all that much either.

My .02 to this retread of a thread. It does come up every 3 months, so I’ll keep repeating myself every 3 months.
It all can be summed up in one word.
MATURITY
Unfortunately, maturity is not an age, it is an attitude. I know mature 18 year olds and immature 48 year olds. Yes, boys & girls, I wish my dad would have bought me a car like a Z when I was 18, but if he had I would not be here today typing this.

3K = ~ 12% of 26K. That's where I got 12% from.
Don't mistake all this crap for 'hate'. I don't know you from Adam, and I wouldn't be so rude as to assert that you're not a nice person, I'm sure you are, especially given that you've maintained a pretty decent attitude in this post (something that other young folks in other threads have failed to do, so kudo's to you for that).
What all of us 'old folks' (again, I'm sure that to you, 32 is ancient), are pointing out is that there is so much "I paid for my car" BS on this site, when in fact the actual sacrifice that you made to own the car was quite minimal, especially considering your other obligations. Parents, dead relatives, and yes, luck bought your car, minus the 3K you pulled out of savings (and we won't touch how the savings were generated).
The real point of this whole thread that Cat started is that how, who, and what paid for your car isn't why any of us came to the forum. Why the younger crowd chronically feels the need to bring these personal facts to light I have no idea. We came to talk about our cars, not the life-circumstances that led us to own it.
BTW, I may get out to the 'mixing bowl meet' on the 8th. If I do, soda and a hot-dog are on me, just to show you that while I may be poking at you here, I'm really just a Z owner like you, and I have no ill will towards you. I'm just stating the facts as I see them.

marhot, I wish i hadn't of started it because it is turning into what I didn't want it too. It was just to flame on the threads such as 350zprincess and chromesilva,... I guess this is what i get...
some people are having a hard time realizing that this thread was a JOKE and was to make fun of the threads that were like this. That is why I said I WAS 12, I was sure everyone would realize the Joke in that...
please let this thread die...

You mean this was a joke? I thought all 12 year olds had sports cars!

Hey, you started it!
Sure....I actually saw a guy driving down the road the other day with a cup of coffee in one hand and the newspaper in the other. The Etch-A-Sketch ought to be a piece of cake in comparison.
The problem with this (The Etch-a-nav, as I call it) is that clearing the screen involves putting the car on a special frame rack, turning it upside down and shaking vigorously. The car always runs weird after I do that. I think it's a bug in the electrical system.
(Man, we're headin' down hill fast, aren't we?)

.... Alright let's post about happy stuff.... like smoking that Ford Taurus off the line... YA!!!!

I used to say that "I paid for this" when I was in HS and College b/c I worked, and I spent the money I made from working, so therefore, I paid for it.... ummm... right??? hah...
Now that I have a 'real' job, own a house, pay all my own everything... I realize I didn't really pay for anything when I was younger.... so what that I spent 2K of "my own money" on stereo equipment.... I was living in an apt my parents were paying for... going to school which they were paying for.... using books they were paying for, etc...
I do consider myself very lucky that I only had to work in high school and college for the "fun" money that I wanted to spend on "fun" things...
I would have been able to "afford" a Z pretty easily in college.... it also would have taken 60% or more of my monthly income.... now can I afford to spend 60% of my income on a car???? I wish I could, that'd be a sweet car!

But, now I see how expensive "living" truely is.... I've said this on another thread, but I'll say it again b/c it upsets me so much... the rudest awakening I got by getting a "real" job was taxes!! Most of us probably pay more (maybe double, tripple, quadruple, etc) in taxes "per hour" than we used to make per hour at our college job (even inflation corrected). Want to get upset? figure out how much tax (SS, medicare, state tax, etc) you pay per hour!! $8? $10? $15???
If I had to "write a check" each month for all the money the government witholds from earnings, It would be larger than mortgage, all my utilities, and even car insurance, COMBINED!!
I know we all "get something in return" from our taxes... but that's another thread, so please don't reply railing on me about how every penny we get taxed we get back in some form or another....
And Don't worry Cat, I had a sports car when I was 12 too!!! It took 4 AA batteries and I would chase the cat (no pun intended Cat) around the house with it... (Actually, it took a 7.2V NiCd pack and would go 48mph "real mph" (not scale)... but you get the point
)I knew you were just joking Cat, I just had to throw that in there that I had a fast car when I was 12 too!

Of course, I was in school in the late '70s and 280Zs were under $8,000.
