Question shipping fee?

Went to a 2 local Bay Area Nissan dealerships last Sunday to get a DB Touring, Nav, AT, aero pack, with side air curtains, 17" wheels (since I'll be slapping on some 19"s)

the 1st tried to hard sell me and quoted me $37400. I walked before he could do a search for the model.

the 2nd was more laid back and quoted me $35900. after waiting about 30 minutes, they came back and said there is only one in California and it is located somewhere in LA and it would cost $800 to ship it up here. I could not go down there an drive it up because they where swapping vehicles.

They would not discount to cost of shipping nor would they let me go down there and pick it up....
I also asked if I can order a new one - they replied that the '04 production is over and that I would be ordering for '05 and that the '05s would be $1500 more than '04s and the fact that interest rates are going up.

DID I JUST GET WORKED FOR THE $800???
How does the detination charge play into this????

The only amount I put down so far is $1000 - car should be here next week.

BTW got 4.59% for 60mos. from CapitalOne finance through LendingTree.com, NISSAN finance was quoting me 5.79%

Also, I must say in the past three days - I've learned a lot from all your postings.

When I purchased my Roadster last September, the dealer ate the cost of shipping my car from Georgia to Jersey. They shippied it via private flat bed not a car carrier. I think the cost was about $1,250.00. I would push to have them cover the cost. The destination charge only applies to shipping from dock to dealer.

When I ordered my Z, the dealer located one in Jersey that matched. They told me it would be about $800 to ship it to LA and they would be willing to eat half the cost. I declined and waited for my order instead.

Too late now but what you could have done is go to the Nissan website and search the inventory of dealers in the L.A. area. You might have been able to spot it that way and make a deal directly with the dealer that had the car.

The last dealer I talked to wanted $600 to ship from Detriot to St. Louis. They said it costs about $1 per mile, but fluctuates with the price of gas. I asked to take delivery from the dealer in Detriot, but they declined. They gave me a very non-descript answer about insurance and dealer final inspection and stuff. I wasn't very clear on what he was saying.

I don't think the dealer worked you over for anything. Depending on how the deal worked out, they could have covered some or all of the shipping, but you are going to end up paying for it either way. They will make thier money one way or another.

I just got a quote from an auto shipping company (DAS) from San Diego to Boston for $854 which is just a little bit further than your route. Granted that was on an open carrier (I'm actually opting for a closed carrier), but someone driving your car back would create even more potential wear. I also shipped my car from Las Vegas to San Diego (in a closed carrier) and it was only ~$250.

I also just bought a new car a couple of weeks ago and my dealer had to obtain the car from another dealer ~75 miles away and they never even mentioned a delivery charge.

just my .02.

when I went shopping for my Z, I took a print out of exactly what I wanted, They located one in Indianapolis and wanted $900.00
to ship it to Columbus.

Then I took a test drive in an 03 SB track model, needless to say, i could not wait and bought it right then and there, they knocked the $900.00 off the MRSP.

Thanks for the feedback... I still dont trust dealers....
I could have used the $800 for mods but
Hey, I guess that's what it costs to get the color/model I want.

Also - Can't wait to get the Z next week.

Again, thanks for the feedback...
I must say this is a very informative forum!

Since when is trying to get yourself a better deal considered, "slimey"? It seems to me that's a fair option when purchasing a car. It isn't like I'm subtracting money off the contract like they try to add money onto it.

Heck his cars trip is much longer than a bit further than yours 3,200 miles vs 300 miles. 800 seems steep from LA to the SF/Oak area.
