AT C5 vs Z, any way to win?
I've got a friend with a 2002 C5 Auto that wants to take a go against my Z. Is there any way, roll, dig, some magic speed where he's not in his powerband, that I can beat him or at the very least hang within a few cars of him?
I can launch the Z pretty well with Auto but I don't think that'll matter if we go from a dig.
Any advice?

I doubt it. The C5 has more power and is lighter. That's the only LS1 I'm pretty certain edges the Z out. Try taking out your spare and jack. Lower the tire pressure on your rears to 30ish or perhaps a bit more just for the run. Or, if you can, get some nice drag radials. Oh, you have an auto too. Well, that just about does it then. With your drive train loss, you're probably at about 225ish rwhp. Heh, did I mention you're going to get edged out?

Make him turn his car off, by the time he cranks it, you can have enough of a head start...
BTW, I like the "Look over there" method mentioned
The C5 is just too fast, even in an Auto. Just be glad it isn't a Z06.

(Who has to tangle with a few Z06's at the track.

The most important factor in a "drag" race is the driver. If you can get a good jump on him there's a chance you can win, despite the obvious performance differences.
If you don't already know how to brake torque an automatic, here's what you'll need to do: Use your left foot to PLANT down on the brake (make sure you're braking as hard as possible), put car in drive, mash go pedal down until car's revving at around 3,500 rpm (modulate the go pedal to achieve this), release brake and floor it at the same time. Lightly modulate the go pedal once the tires start slipping and then plow your right foot back into the go pedal.
Go practice this until you can get ideal launches over and over again, then get the jump on him on the drag race. Afterwards replace your clutch pack, torque converter and possibly transmission because they'll all fail within the next 30,000 mile from the abuse.

Think about it this way: someone in a stock honda civic want to beat you in your Z. He can put on R stickers, change bumpers, put on 2 wings, etc. If he wins, is not the car.
Car for car, the Z does not have the performance to beat the C5. If you know you are a better driver, meet him at a track or AutoX. You may a chance.
Or just buy him a beer and

ur insane.... raise it to 3500? the rear wheels will be spinning bby then, how do I know? cause I own an automatic. The best rpms to raise it to about is 1500-2000 depending on if u did a burn out or how big your tires are. You dont wanna spin to much so practice the launch and see where u dont get too much wheel spin.
Just flip up your passenger seat while your racing to reveal your super-duper engine management system and NAAAAAWWWWS!!!
Um, drag race? good luck. But, you might have a chance if you take him on a super-twisty and NARROW road. Not that his car can't stick just as good as yours, but it takes bigger ***** to do it on a narrow road in a vette. Of course, with that said, those are the worst roads to go out and try and prove something on....
but, drag racing, naaaah. think he's got ya.

Hmmm ... maybe if he's got the 2.73 rear end gears (optional is 3.42 and those C5's are FAST) and some worn out tires. Yeah, like the others have said, brake torquing is the only way to possibly get a hole shot. Let the computer shift for you; the manumatic stuff is usually slower on a slushbox. And turn off TCS, too.
C5 in the twistys ... I think we're outgunned going straight or going around curves. I mean, it's a $45-50K car! And we know LS1's respond well to any bolt-ons.
Maybe you can sneak over and pull up his parking brake before the race, and he won't notice!

Ignorance is bliss. The manual mode is always quicker then full auto. Because of the higher fuel cut off(6900rpm)unlike the full auto(6600rpm). The drag times shows proof that its about .3sec faster in manual mode.
