Do not expect the Rx-8 to be an Rx-7. Mazda did not design the Rx-8 to be a sports car. The Rx-7 is Mazda's sport car. If you want a sports car, get the Z. If you want a relatively quick 4 door, 4 seater get the Rx-8. If you want a rotary sports car, wait for the new Rx-7. The release of the new Rx-7 is highly dependent on the success of the Rx-8. This is just some info I got from the Rx-8 boards.
With a Wankle rotary engine, 4 racing seats, and its bubbley styling, I predict the RX-8 will be the most flagrant nerdmobile ever. (No offense intended, but I have to watch out for my editorial integrity.)

Man, that RX-8 is one ugly car. Are they really going to keep that one stupid, 3rd door?
Holy cow, I used to like some of Mazda's designs.
buy one dude, I need something else to laugh at other than Pontiac Aztecs.

Yeah. The RX-8 is one of the worst designs I've ever seen. The entire car looks pregnant to me. Better luck with the RX-7.
My only worry is buying a Z and then having a significantly better RX-7 or Supra come out. I guess that'd be at least a couple of years away though.

I really want to like the RX-8, but I just can't get over the styling. Just not my cup o' tea.
I think the performance should be very good if all the original info is correct: 250hp 2800 lbs, but I've heard some rumors that it will be over 3000 lbs, which means it won't have the same type of performance of the Z.
I love my Z, so I don't need to worry about the 8, but I hope it sells really well because I would really like to have the RX-7 back in North America. That's the Mazda I'm waiting for!
-D'oh!

I actually was considering the RX-8 at one point, but then I realized that I liked the Z better.
Things I liked about the RX-8:
- Suicide doors. Yes, oddly enough, I love the idea... dunno about safety, but it's a great idea for using those tiny rear seats... and it's so... well... open.
- Rotary. Well it's a cool technology and it'll be something different to own. But I was worried about who would qualify to repair the rotary engine.
- Style. It looks aggressive I think... maybe a bit too curvy, but it's not bad. It's definitely a different style than the Z. Much different.
But all in all... I have a Z coming in the next 2-3 weeks which I'm peeing in my pants for.
So the only cars (realistically) I dream about now are:
- Mini Cooper S (dunno, I like the car... it would be a fun daily driver). Interior styling is really wonky, but in a refreshing way.
- Upcoming GTR. Yeah, if I had the money to boot and had sold all my now worthless company stock I probably could afford the left rear well on the car. But oh well, I never thought I could afford the Z + a house, so perhaps the GTR is the next step up.
- Mclaren F1. Hahah just kidding.
Anyways. Just putting my rather worthless 2 cents in.

I can live with the RX-8 but I wouldn't buy it. I have a feeling it's going to lack the rigidness you need in a performance car.
But I love the rotary engine and a 2800lb car with a 250hp rotary will toast our beloved Z
The RX-7 will be the bomb, mark my words. I would take a 3rd generation RX-7 over a my Z any day of the week. So the new RX-7 will be the hottest thing on the market. I would imagine it will be a couple hundred lbs lighter than the RX-8 with a TC rotary, and would be able to toast just about any car on the road.
Heck the 3rd gen 7's with mod's are already destroying vettes and vipers.
I also read that if all goes well they may start putting rotary's in the miata.

I saw the RX-8 at the NY Auto show in April....wasn't impressed with it's looks whatsoever.

Guys I cant beleive how you trash teh rx-8 so much, the engine is a marvelous piece of work. Its power delivery charecteristics are similar to the s2000's engine, and the s2000 is no slouch. It had much potential, the syling as always, looks better in person. Its not ugly in my opinion, and I have yet to read a review which trashes the styling.
If that engine is turbo'd for the actual RX-7 replacement sportscar, our 350z's can expect some heavy competitions. As well that engine is going to be offered int he 2400lb upcoming Miata.
