Annoying Dealer Misinformation
I call Hayes Nissan here in Nashville, because I've heard they are getting in a blue Z, and I haven't seen one yet. I call, ask for sales, and find out it is true, there is a blue Enthusiast coming in soon, and it isn't sold (I'm not interested in an enthusiast, but would like to see it). I ask how much it is being sold for, and they tell me $33 something. I asked, so you are selling over MSRP? I'm told that Nissan, due to the limited production on the Z has told dealers to charge $3,000 over. I say, "I had heard the production numbers were in the 30K+ range, and that even the G35C was supposed to be produced in the 12K range this year". "No", I'm told, "Nissan is only making 18K Zs, so they are very hard to come by".
Why do they think we are total idiots? I know there are lots of reputable dealerships. My family owned a car dealership for 37 years before selling it a few years ago, and we didn't jerk people around like that. I know personally several families in the car business that are very reputable and honest.
Gah, I knew it would be a PITA next time I had to buy a car, since I couldn't buy from myself
, but this is annoying.

Hey, MannishBoy.
I've run into the same thing on the Z here in east Tennessee. Before I decided to order a Z from Herb Newton Nissan in Oak Ridge (a dealer I highly recommend), I talked to lots of dealers and salesmen in the area. Many tried to tell me what all of the other dealerships were doing, what they were selling Z's for, or what they were ordering them for. They rarely had a clue.
I had been to each dealership in the area personally, trying to get the best compromise between cost and schedule. Some tried to tell me that they would order one at $2-3k over MSRP and that that was the best deal in the area - they even named other dealerships. Maybe their own salesmen didn't know how to get a good deal, because, at one point, I had already orderd one at MSRP in Oak Ridge. And, thanks to this Forum, I knew much more about the car than most of them did.
It almost seems like some dealers and salesmen want a windfall profit from every single car without really working to learn the car, working to build an honest relationship with the customer, selling the car for a respectable profit, and moving lots of cars through. I'm glad I've found a good dealer on this car. It really relieves a lot of the tension and frustration that I've seen others go through on this Forum. Anyway, good luck to all!

The thing is, I've found several dealers in Nashville selling at list. The only problem is I won't pay either doc fees or add on stuff, and that narrows it down a bit, too, but I can still find places. In fact, I even talked to one place that would let me do a pass-thru delivery on my old car if I sold it prior to getting a new one in (since you pay taxes only on the difference in TN, this saves quite a bit of money).
I knew going in I wasn't buying from that dealer most likely. I'm just trying to look at a blue car to help me make up my mind
I actually didn't like the first salesperson I talked to that had told me the car was coming in, so I thought I'd just call the switchboard and give the dealership another chance. This salesperson wasn't as annoying as the first, but the markup and lack of knowledge turned me off.
